The above statement is just my personal opinion that reflects my own bias and experience. In addition, only faculty from top school are interested in applicant's potentials beyond productivity. Second-tier schools strive to attract the applicants who have more productivity than brains. My comments also do not apply to non-US schools.
In summary, one A-journal publication is, at most, an indicator of the applicant's research potential, and the indicator is strong only if the applicant is the major contributor of the paper in an important way. It is the real education and self determination that truly distinguishes a future scholar from others. |
