i agree with you that the placements of ccer are as good as top econ master programs in us or uk.  the reason i mention finance is that lz was asking master program good for finance phd application.

i don't have the data about the placements of lse econ master, but lse certainly has a better reputation and offer better training than ccer.

however, not many smart chinese students could afford the tuition.  in my opinion, if those ccer students had gone to lse rather than ccer, they would have better placements

I think TOP5 econ and finance PhD have comparable placement. A top financial economics PhD can find a finance position just like top finance PhD. Of course most of CCER's offer is econ. Yet that what about LSE econ master program? Would most of them get into finance? I doubt it. In that sense, CCER is not worse than LSE in econ master program. As for finance master program, I don't know their placement in grad school. Yet I believe that can not be much better than top econ master program.

In 2007 CCER admits 40 master students. Most of them are on the list. The mismatch could be due to early graduation of some student there.

You may be right. In terms of my friend's application experience, getting the offer from such displine may be even harder than business majors, especially for the chinese applicants.

I agree that the added value of LSE is higher than CCER. Especially for those whose backgrounds are not so shinning.

The skills required are very different across different areas.  It is easier for me to be admitted to a finance program than a biology program.  does it mean that the admission in biology is more competitive and more demanding?  certainly not.  i think the best criterion is acceptance rate.

I really don't think a political science program is more competitive than a finance program in term of the acceptance rate.

能拿到harvard econ phd 的 offer, 如果想申请finance而且一直朝着finance这个方向努力的话申请一个top10的finance phd program不是啥难事. econ总的来说比商学院l好申请,但是像harvard mit这种top3的econ,并不比top5的finance来的容易, 而且毕业了想到商学院当老师, 也很容易.

ccer的平均学生素质肯定比lse的中国学生平均素质好的多太多了.

Comparing biology with political science may not be a wise analogy. Chinese are good at science but not social science and american like political science.

The acceptance rate is roughly the same for top finance program and political science program. The top political science program only takes several students every year.

The reason why it is harder to get in is that it is difficult to prove that chinese can do good job in this discipline. You should not ignore that for chinese students getting good RL from political science professors of US is hardly possible, a fact that is distinctively different from finance.

要是说作为finance PhD跳板的硕士项目吧，加拿大的UBC和Queen's都有MSc in Finance，虽然叫MSc但都是研究型硕士，UBC的感觉更好一些因为时间长然后学费几乎免得差不多了还有RA,TA机会。

省钱的话，之前许多人都在香港读一个MPhil作为跳板，但是听说现在香港好像取消MPhil了。再有就是欧洲，比如Tilburg的MPhil in Finance，还有瑞典SSE的两年金融硕士（瑞典免学费），都是研究型导向的项目，而且这些地方都是金融研究的重镇。

Tilburg的Mphil也有奖学金和RA,TA，他们自己的博士项目也很好，去年还是前年有一个去了Booth一个去了Stern，当然他们是在博士期间就发了JF. 所以自己的因素当然很重要的，之前听说有中国学生从芬兰申到Harvard商学院的PHD，不知道是不是芬兰的HSE。
