If you are considering or applying for the Ph.D in management program at Purdue University and would like to know something not posted on the website, I might be able to help.  First year @Purdue.

Hi Wapianwang,

Nice to know you! Thank you very much for your willingness to share sth about Purdue. I have several questions and would you like to give me a hint on them?

1) What's your major research area? How's your experience so far?

2) How's the faculty at Purdue? Are they supportive and reachable?

3) How's the location of Purdue in your opinion?

4) Any other insights about the Ph.D. program?

Thanks very much for your time.

1) What's your major research area? How's your experience so far?
My major is strategic management and I am taking finance as my minor. So far I like the experience although it has been very stressful.

2) How's the faculty at Purdue? Are they supportive and reachable?
I know almost all profs in strategy and some in finance. All of them are nice and supportive. I didn't have a lot of interactions with the Ecoonomics profs who teach maths. But I think they are also willing to offer help if you ask.

3) How's the location of Purdue in your opinion?
If you really like big cities, then Purdue might not be the place for you. But you actually can get almost anything here. In reality, I doubt you will have time to experience them since you most probably will be busy all the time.

4) Any other insights about the Ph.D. program?
I am not sure which area are you looking into so I cannot be specific. In general, doing a Ph.D in b-school is not an easy job. You should be prepared to be focus.

Good luck!

hello Wapianwang, thanks for your message here...

I have applied for the PhD program at Purdue.

I want to know, to your experience, what types of background does Purdue prefer? publications or GPA? I have asked a professor at Purdue of the same question and she replied that Purdue doesn't care applicants' past research experience. I think it is a little weired....Is that true to your experience?
Thank you very much~~~

Hi. Wapianwang

It's so nice of you!

I also concerns that question plingtingxiao asked. Well. it's hard for students in China to apply for American universities: we do not know who they want and we just guess and thus apply for a number of schools. Some time it really make one feel tired.

Thank you very much

by the way, I'm also interested in strategy.

I think it depends on what area you are applying for.  In my area, my fellow students usually have a few years of work experiences and a master degree. But we don't necessarily have published in the area before we came here. In finance and MIS, they seem to like younger people but they all have masters(at least for the last two years).  In any case, higer GPA and test scores are always good to have. If you have publications, I think you need to show that your research interests are related to one or several Purdue professors.  In other words, I guess the professors don't expect you to have publications before you apply. If you do have published in a good journal and good one only, you will be a strong candidate for any b-school.

Yes, I think it is difficult to apply for PhD programs directly from China. If one or a few alumni from your school have enrolled in the PhD program, it might be better because the professors now have an idea of your school. Are you going to apply for strategy @Purdue in 2010 or you are still weighing different options? PhD programs are quite different from each other mainly because of the professors and tradition/style of the program. What are your research interests?

Hi Wapianwang

I plan to apply Finance PhD and have several questions:

1. what kind of background do they prefer?

2. How many students were admitted in the past two year?

3. Roughly how many people apply each year?

Thanks,

ccaml

I don't know what background they prefer but I can tell you who got admitted.

In 2009, four finance students got admitted (two Chinese, one U.S and one from mid-Asia) but two of them are unfunded. All of them have masters. Two fellow Chinese students (one boy and one girl) got their undergrad degrees from Beijing U. and masters(M.S.F and M.S.A) in the U.S. They don't have prior work experiences. In 2008, three finance students got admitted (two Chinese, one international). One of the two Chinese students got her undergrad degree from Fudan U. and M.S.F in the U.S. She has no work experiences. The other Chinese guy has similar background except he had worked for a bank in Chinese for a year or two.

I don't know how many applied last year.

Good luck!
