正确答案是E，但我选的是C。不明白E和题目有什么关系，如果小孩补贴老人的话，那老人生活应该更好才对，怎么能解释他们并没有富裕呢？

其实我觉得这个选项也不错，但看到E后，觉得E更好，具体解释如下。 

D. the pension was increased when the number of elderly Runagians below the poverty level reached an all-time high

按照这句话的道理是应该better-off，与句意相反，排除

E. in Runagia children typically supplement the income of elderly parents, but only by enough to provide them with a comfortable living

 

C和E的区别：

区别1.主观和客观：C中他们主动选择买贵的导致他们less better off，反观E是因为客观的因素（儿女只给他们父母足够的钱，打个比方，父母最低需要100，儿女给100，现在政府给他们父母50，由于父母最低要求没变，且狠心的儿女仅需要他们满足最低标准，所以父母最后收的还是100）

 

如上啰嗦的，E是被动原因，更符合题意的需求，也更让人信服。

 

另外C的错误：

题目已经说了 Inflation in the intervening period has been negligible，言下之意就是说，一切inflation都没有作用，这就在整个推理中排除了任何与价格的因素，让读者寻找非价格的理由。
