Actually, MR has very good future and great personal development opportunity. No matter B2B or B2C, companies need to understand the market before executing their short or long term strategy. Meanwhile, due to the rapid developing of the high technology, as well as the online application, the MR will go to high level in future decades. In EU and US, market research is very popular, and very developed. The people who is working in market research, all from MBA or even higher degrees. It is just because of the corporates or enterprises in China did not realize the importance of the market research, plus, the mass market situation and high demanding population weak the key situation of the market survey or research. But, it does not mean, Market research is not important or not useful. Opposite, market research or data analysis will turn to the main activities in marketing side, and it will be a new trends of marketing, especial when the market is not steady or mature. Wish it could give you some views and help.
I like MR and worked in two different top US companies for 3+ years, practicing both B2B and B2C researches.
I agree with some parts of what is said above, but I believe all functional areas in mkt are important. In some companies, one functional areas may get more attention than the other. It all depends on the nature of the company and the approach the executive management wants to take.
I can safely say that MR in U.S. is a very developed career/industry. For many reasons, the MR industry in China is far under development. Whether it'll become a well advanced industry in China in the future years involves too many factors. After all, MR is the most useful in free market, where companies really needs to understand the customers due to more intensive competition.
Hope the young mkt ppl in this thread will find your passion.

Can't agree more on your point that "MR is the most useful in free market". From my experience in business as a mkter having contacts with both China local enterprenuers and foreign companies, I sense the strong differences on their way of steering business. The CHN companies are always playing with the rules and in tight contact with the government officials, while for the foreign companies, they treat the VOC as the key criterion, and follow the clear logic from VOC to Value proposition. Now I see its just this "free market" or not cause this difference! Therefore, agree with @Doer that hard to say if in the future, MR in China will be booming. Or we shall see the overall expectation of business environment as the guideline of predicting the future development of MR in China. Hope we could become more open with less goverment interference.
