想请教一下大家as...as...的比较，一直对这个比较晕。

记得上学时学过。The apple is as good as the pear.  就是as...as..中间接adj，表示比较，

但是后边一个as一接句子就有点晕了，前边的那个were as disturbing to his own time有是怎样的结构? 比较结构的平行体现在哪里?

as...as 中间不仅仅是接形容词的，这里考的是比较的前后要一致，注意保持平行对称。

去掉中间的说明部分，我觉得这个句子是个主系表结构。简化句子，就是Thomas Eakins' powerful style and his choices of subject
        were
        as disturbing to his own time as
        they
        are compel­ling for ours，主语对称，系动词（理解成谓语动词也可）对称（但是时态上保持准确），表语对称。

我比较同意许仙的看法。as...as...是比较，同样的东西在不同时代的比较，所以前面用了过去式，强调ＸＸ的贡献在他的时代和现在（一般现在时）同样重要。
