Q4 to Q6:

        Prior to 1965 geologists assumed

that the two giant rock plates meeting at

the San Andreas Fault generate heat

Line

through friction as they grind past each

  (5)      other, but in 1965 Henyey found that

temperatures in drill holes near the

fault were not as elevated as had

been expected.  Some geologists

wondered whether the absence of

 (10)      friction-generated heat could be

explained by the kinds of rock com-

posing the fault.  Geologists’ pre-1965

assumptions concerning heat gen-

erated in the fault were based on

 (15)      calculations about common varieties of

rocks, such as limestone and granite;

but “weaker” materials, such as clays,

had already been identified in samples

retrieved from the fault zone.  Under

 (20)      normal conditions, rocks composed of

clay produce far less friction than do

       other rock types.

       In 1992 Byerlee tested whether

these materials would produce friction

 (25)      10 to 15 kilometers below the Earth’s

surface.  Byerlee found that when clay

samples were subjected to the thou-

sands of atmospheres of pressure

they would encounter deep inside the

 (30)      Earth, they produced as much friction

as was produced by other rock types.

The harder rocks push against each

other, the hotter they become; in other

words, pressure itself, not only the

 (35)      rocks’ properties, affects frictional

heating.  Geologists therefore won-

dered whether the friction between the

plates was being reduced by pockets

of pressurized water within the fault that

push the plates away from each other.

Q4:

The passage suggests which of the following regarding Henyey’s findings about temperature in the San Andreas Fault?

  1. Scientists have yet to formulate a definitive explanation for Henyey’s findings.
  2. Recent research suggests that Henyey’s explanation for the findings should be modified.
  3. Henyey’s findings had to be recalculated in light of Byerlee’s 1992 experiment.
  4. Henyey’s findings provided support for an assumption long held by geologists.
  5. Scientists have been unable to duplicate Henyey’s findings using more recent experimental methods.

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q5:

The passage is primarily concerned with

  1. evaluating a method used to test a particular scientific hypothesis
  2. discussing explanations for an unexpected scientific finding
  3. examining the assumptions underlying a particular experiment
  4. questioning the validity of a scientific finding
  5. presenting evidence to support a recent scientific hypothesis

Answer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q6:

The passage mostly agree that Heney’s findings about temperature in the San Andreas Fault made the greatest contribution in that they

  1. revealed an error in previous measurements of temperature in the San Andreas Fault zone
  2. indicated the types of clay present in the rocks that form the San Andreas Fault
  3. established the superiority of a particular technique for evaluating data concerning friction in the San Andreas Fault
  4. suggested that geologists had inaccurately assumed that giant rock plates that meet at the San Andreas Fault generate heat through friction
  5. confirmed geologists’ assumptions about the amount of friction generated by common varieties of rocks, such as limestone and granite

Answer:

Q7:

For similar cars and drivers, automobile insurance for collision damage has always cost more in Greatport than in Fairmont.  Police studies, however, show that cars owned by Greatport residents are, on average, slightly less likely to be involved in a collision than cars in Fairmont.  Clearly, therefore, insurance companies are making a greater profit on collision-damage insurance in Greatport than in Fairmont.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

  1. Repairing typical collision damage does not cost more in Greatport than in Fairmont.
  2. There are no more motorists in Greatport than in Fairmont.
  3. Greatport residents who have been in a collision are more likely to report it to their insurance company than Fairmont residents are.
  4. Fairmont and Greatport are the cities with the highest collision-damage insurance rates.
  5. The insurance companies were already aware of the difference in the likelihood of collisions before the publication of the police reports.

CRNo.14

Within 20 years it will probably be possible to identify the genetic susceptibility an individual may have toward any particular disease.Eventually, effective strateties will be discovered to counteract each such susceptibility.Once these effective strategies are found, therefore, the people who follow them will never get sick.

The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions?

A  For every disease there is only one strategy that can prevent its occurrence.

B  In the future, genetic will be the only medical specialty of any importance.

C  All human sicknesses are in part the result of individuals` genetic susceptibilities.

D  All humans are genetically susceptible to some diseases.

E  People will follow medical advice when they are convinced that it is effective.

I chose C.But in the argument, the anther said people ‘will never get sick’. Answer C only suggest

‘in part the result’.I think C can not completely meet the assumption.

SC No.18

Computers are becoming faster, more powerful, and more reliable, and so too are modems, they are the devices to allow two or more computers to share information over regular telephone lines.

A  so too are modems, they are the devices to allow

B  so too are modems, the devices that allow

C  so too modems, the devices allowing

D  also modems, they are the devices that allow

E  also modems, which are the devices to allow

I do not know why E is not correct.

强调句型:It is ...that...

OG11(

OG11(

OG11(

完成情况(完成;SC:正确率90%12mins;

                   CR:正确率100%12 mins ;RC  正确率100%11mins

111.

As a baby emerges from the darkness of the womb with a rudimentary sense of vision, it would be rated about 20/500, or legally blind if it were an adult with such vision.

(A) As a baby emerges from the darkness of the womb with a rudimentary sense of vision, it would be rated about 20/500, or legally blind if it were an adult with such vision.

(B) A baby emerges from the darkness of the womb with a rudimentary sense of vision that would be rated about 20/500, or legally blind as an adult.

(C) As a baby emerges from the darkness of the womb, its rudimentary sense of vision would be rated about 20/500; qualifying it to be legally blind if an adult.

(D) A baby emerges from the darkness of the womb with a rudimentary sense of vision that would be rated about 20/500; an adult with such vision would be deemed legally blind.

(E) As a baby emerges from the darkness of the womb, its rudimentary sense of vision, which would deemed legally blind for an adult, would be rated about 20/500.

In choice A, it, the subject of the main clause, seems to refer to baby, the subject of the subordinate clause; thus, A seems to state that the newbom baby, rather than its sense of vision, would be rated 20/500 . Similarly, choices B and E use awkward and ambiguous phrasing that suggests that the sense of vision, rather than an adult with 20/500 vision, would be considered legally blind. C incorrectly uses the semicolon, which should separate independent clauses, to set off a verb phrase.
The phrase if an adult in C is also illogical, since it states that a baby could also be an adult
. D is the best choice.

51.   Biometric access-control systems—those using fingerprints, voiceprints, and so forth, to regulate admittance to restricted areas—work by degrees of similarity, not by identity. After all, even the same finger will rarely leave exactly identical prints. Such systems can be adjusted to minimize refusals of access to legitimate access‑ seekers. Such adjustments, however, increase the likelihood of admitting impostors.

Which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by the information above?

(A) If a biometric access-control system were made to work by identity, it would not produce any correct admittance decisions.

(B) If a biometric access-control system reliably prevents impostors from being admitted, it will sometimes turn away legitimate access-seekers.

(C) Biometric access-control systems are appropriate only in situations in which admittance of impostors is less of a problem than is mistaken refusal of access.

(D) No biometric access-control systems—based, for example, on numerical codes—are less likely than biometric ones to admit impostors.

(E) Anyone choosing an access-control system should base the choice solely on the ratio of false refusals to false admittances.

OG11(

完成情况(完成;总用时:40m;SC:正确率100%;

                   CR:正确率95% ;RC  正确率80%

节省时间最好的方法(同样应用与阅读和SC)POE(point of elimination)排除法.
找到无关选项是用POE(排除法)的关键.
Out of scope

110.

“Fast cycle time” is a strategy of designing a manufacturing organization to eliminate bottlenecks and delays in production. Not only does it speed up production, but it also ensures quality. The reason is that the bottlenecks and delays cannot be eliminated unless all work is done right the first time.

The claim about quality made above rests on a questionable presupposition that

(A) any flaw in work on a product would cause a bottleneck or delay and so would be prevented from occurring on a “fast cycle” production line

(B) the strategy of “fast cycle time” would require fundamental rethinking of product design

(C) the primary goal of the organization is to produce a product of unexcelled quality, rather than to generate profits for stockholders

(D) “fast cycle time” could be achieved by shaving time off each of the component processes in a production cycle

(E) “fast cycle time” is a concept in business strategy that has not yet been put into practice in a factory

not A unless B表达为:A→B,文中表达即瓶颈和延误消失所有的工作都在第一时间做对,

BA,既没有做对有瓶颈和延误,是正确答案的改写:any flaw in work bottleneck or delay

96.   Commentator: The theory of trade retaliation states that countries closed out of any of another country’s markets should close some of their own markets to the other country in order to pressure the other country to reopen its markets. If every country acted according to this theory, no country would trade with any other.

The commentator’s argument relies on which of the following assumptions?

(A) No country actually acts according to the theory of trade retaliation.

(B) No country should block any of its markets to foreign trade.

(C) Trade disputes should be settled by international tribunal.

(D) For any two countries, at least one has some market closed to the other.

(E) Countries close their markets to foreigners to protect domestic producers.
