TO: 宝儿

Mel: The official salary for judges has always been too low to attract the best

Candidates to the job. The legislature’s move to raise the salary has

done nothing to improve the situation, because it was coupled with

a ban on receiving money for lectures and teaching engagements.

Pat:  No, the raise in salary really does improve the situation. Since very few

judges teach or give lectures, the ban will have little or no negative

effect.

Pat’s response to Mel is inadequate in that it

A.     attempts to assess how a certain change will affect potential members

of a group by providing evidence about its effect on the current members.

B.     mistakenly takes the cause of a certain change to be an effect of that change

C.     attempts to argue that a certain change will have a positive effect merely

by pointing to the absence of negative effects

D.     simply denies Mel’s claim without putting forward any evidence in support

of that denial

E.      assumes that changes that benefit the most able members of a group

necessarily benefit all members of that group.

Because
visual inspection cannot reliably distinguish certain skin
discolorations from skin cancers, dermatologists at clinics have needed
to perform tests of skin tissue taken from patients.  At
Westville Hospital, dermatological diagnostic costs were reduced by the
purchase of a new imaging machine that diagnoses skin cancer in such
cases as reliably as the tissue tests do.  Consequently,
even though the machine is expensive, a dermatological clinic in
Westville is considering buying one to reduce diagnostic costs.

Which of the following would it be most useful for the clinic to establish in order to make its decision?

  1. Whether
the visits of patients who require diagnosis of skin discolorations
tend to be shorter in duration at the clinic than at the hospital

  2. Whether the principles on which the machine operates have been known to science for a long time

  3. Whether the machine at the clinic would get significantly less heavy use than the machine at the hospital does

  4. Whether in certain cases of skin discoloration, visual inspection is sufficient to make a diagnosis of skin cancer

  5. Whether hospitals in other parts of the country have purchased such imaging machine
Because
visual inspection cannot reliably distinguish certain skin
discolorations from skin cancers, dermatologists at clinics have needed
to perform tests of skin tissue taken from patients. "
At
Westville Hospital, dermatological diagnostic costs were reduced by the
purchase of a new imaging machine that diagnoses skin cancer in such
cases as reliably as the tissue tests do.”

在clinic,
visual inspection 不能可靠地辨别某东西from skin cancers, 所以要采用tests of skin tissue taken from patients. 在hospital, a new imaging machine that diagnoses skin cancer in such
cases as reliably as the tissue tests do, 故clinic must be consider that in certain cases, the
visual inspection is sufficient to make a diagnosis of skin cancer, otherwise, clinic NEED to to perform tests of skin tissue taken from patients.

Answer C, whether the new machine will be "s
ignificantly less heavy use than the machine at the hospital does" is non-relate with what the clinic's  NEEDS ( the needs is to be able to diagnosis certin skin cancer) therefor, D is the best answer.

OPEN for discussing!!!
