How to know you are on the waiting list?

Really curious about it. Will the school or the department email you saying something like you are on our waiting list? Or any other method? Thanks!

I think generally there are two ways to know it. One is getting e-mail or letter from the school/department/PhD coordinator. The other is you contact the program coordinator.
