Essay并不难,只有一篇,"lease state your career goal and the reasons for applying to our MBA Program in 500 words"。我觉得要写出自己的真实感受来,为什么要读MBA,为什么要申请科大(首先在内心里要问问自己科大MBA和别的program有什么不同,这个program是不是自己真正喜欢的。 If you can not convince yourself, how can you convince the admission committee?)。 Essay和GMAT成绩的具体比重我不好说,但是我觉得essay更重要,因为我们班上有个别同学的GMAT还不到600分,但是也能进来。还有一点很重要的就是在essay中最好提一下 "How can you contribute to the program?"。
总之,我觉得essay要写出你的真实感受,让读的人有一种"it's from the bottom of your heart"的感觉。
1. Make sure you are familiar with anything you put down on your resume. You are very likely to be aksed to elaborate on some of them; 2. Show your passion for HKUST, try convince the inverviewer that HKUSTis your first choice and you can contribute to the program; 3. Be prepared to talk about your career goal.

I think how to angle your application is very important; then good reference letters, and your interview skills. I felt very comfortable with the interviewers. And because I am in the US, I went to the activities of these schools such as seminars and discussions, and everytime I spoke up. One word, do your homework. My general impression is that because the school is going to market you after two years, you have to make them feel comfortable and confident about you. And a lot of schools says that when talking about interview. Try to establish some kind of rapport with your interviewer.

If you are not changing your career, you can show your interest in what you are doing now and your desire to exercise a wider set of your talents.
I don't think Stern only likes people from financial background or concentration, every school want diversity. I think IT/Entrepreneurship is fine, the most important thing is to make your career plan reasonable, achievable and natural. I know there are chinese students with IT background or concentration at Stern.

I do not think a title does much for your application since the MBA application is a balanced process. Of course, a manager title do helps the application. More important, show your leadership and personality in your essay, such as about how to overcome the difficulty, how to take actions to solve problems, etc. All my essays are written by me and edited by my husband and me. I recommend you to read a book .

from my own experience, the Ph.D. degree does matter. The only catch is you have to showcase your teamwork, leadership, people-skill, and whatever other merit during this period (no lab rats here..). As a matter of fact, a ph.d. degree quite often offers opportunities in these regards. So for motsun and other friends who had similar backgrounds and are interested in pursuing MBA, you are actually at great advantage! Your strong technical background will work in your favor during the job-hunting season, and don't forget, that is what adcom is also trying to assess.
I think the reason that Hedgeforfun MM got the nod so quickly is that she fly all the way from HK to LA for a school visit, which demonstrated her strong affinity and drive for Anderson (it might be difficult for mainland folks to mimic). I have to give her credit for that, since I know many guys in States don't even bother to visit school, not even the first on their list. But if everything being equal, the key would be "passion" (Wharton term?). It's, indeed, a process of "selling" yourself. This is my philosophy: To not to regret, always try to give or at least "pretend" to give 100%. Visit the school if you can, arrange for an interview even it is not required, attend info sessions, ask lots of questions, show your passion for the school. If you set your goal on something like this, which inevitably cost lots of money and time, your don't want have whatifs. In that way, even you fail, you fail with a sense of serenity. Comparing to work related stuff, BS application is much simpler. There were just a few well-understood factors at large. Well, it may have some variations or sudden events, but hey, what don't in life? So just think of it as a warm-up for the interesting projects/people waiting for you to deal with after school, and the real MBA training starts from here!

我的ps策略是不意味的吹自己,实事求是,提一些自己的不足,以体现自己的成熟,并对自己有个很清醒地认识。

the majority of the bschool applicants have finance/management/consulting background doesn't necessarily mean that people with these types of background will have a better chance of getting in. as the matter of fact, they might be at slightly disadvantage because they need to compete with a large number of applicants from the same pool. bschools like/want diversities in their student body. so your unique background might even give you a slight advantage, but the key is that it must be built on top of a strong application package.
reading the information that you provided, your GMAT is certainly great, but the length of your work experience is a little on the low end, for a top program anyway. the other parts of your application (gpa, rec letters, essays, xc, etc) better be strong enough to pull your applicaton as a package up. also, make sure to get to know the schools and their styles and apply to the ones that fit you (and vice versa)...some schools prefer applicants with longer w/e while others don't focus on it as much...

It doesn't matter at all what your major was and what job you are doing. As Fjapl MM said, B-schools are seeking a diverse student body instead of a homogeneous one. Just show them you have the interest and intention to take up business or management; you have the potential to be a future leader(to some extent, you have shown that with your impressive GMAT score); and you have been preparing for a career change. I really don't think your technical background is a disadvantage.

For a long time I have been considering my career path. My first goal is to work as a business development manager for a major technology company which leads a group of engineers like myself. And my outstretched goal is to eventually become my own entrepreneur. Being an engineer in a software company, my world has always been filled with logics and technologies. And to improve my skills in this area, I pursued and obtained a masters degree in computer science. It is at this point in time when I realized that technical skills are not the true basis of good management. It is also this time when I realize a company’s success is not the sole responsibility of its technological front. I came to realize that structure, method, management, leadership are all key to success in any institution. And I truly believe that the diversified concentrations of the McGill MBA program will reinforce me in these key areas. As a person with traditions and virtues, I firmly believe that in order to be successful, one needs to have Integrity, Leadership and Perseverance. |
