Do you sign the contract with this company? If so, read the contents carefully. If not, I guess you had better tell them the truth now. People in the United States can understand your situation. It is not good to quit the job in three months. Because you need to make some kind of commitment to the company (although not obviously specified) when you begin working with them. This may hurt your reputation.

Agree with Jmxtf. Chances never come back again...If I were you, I would at least take the interviews (if you really like teaching and research). If that insurance company is as famous as Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley which all finance professors know, then your working experience may help. Otherwise it's hard to say...Good luck.

Thank you all, those are really good advices.

Right now I'm working on negotiation with the company.

I must be very careful, though I didn't sign anything, I did answer their offer on phone.

A funny thing is: they've never contact me after I said 'yes' to them.

Just finished interview with Indiana University.

It's a bad idea to tell someone you can not come on a phone interview

Will never do that again

Hi guys,

Now I feel much better, and I will email Boston College later. When I look at what experienced this year, all my trouble is caused by lack of confidence. I should not take that job interview at first first, because I already decided to apply for PhD at that time. But I took it just because I had never interviewed and want to have a trial. (a bad reason)

And when I got the job offer, I became so worried of no PhD offer and no another job offer. That anxiety forced me to make my decision. I should have more confidence at that time.

Later I found job in industry is not so bad. All my professor support my decision, they all think two years' experience will make me a better teacher and a better idea contributor. So I made up my mind to work for a while first and reapply in a couple years.

Now I am anxious again after got these two interviews, still because of a lack of confidence. If now I change my mind again, the reason would be fear of no offer next time, "chance never come back again". But I think I should keep the last part of my confidence this time. Maybe you are right, jmxft. But I believe future chance depends more on my work in coming years. I believe if I work hard enough, I will be much stronger in a couple years. No matter what those professors think, at least I believe I will be a better researcher candidate.

So I quit, and best luck with you guys.

Did you already email  BC? It is not a bad idea visiting their campus and talk with professors even you may not go there. That will help you understand the recruiting process of Finance Ph.D.

Don't think youself that big.. Anyway, I do appreciate your kindness, but I don't think the fact you give up this opportunity will give another one a hand.

I also think you should not give up. At least make your decision after you get the offer.

I myself have 2 years work experience. it really helped me learn a lot and it is very precious.

however, if you have decided that phd is your career goal, I don't think you should waste any opportunities you can get.

If I have a chance to choose again now, I would choose to go for phd if I could get an offer right after my BS, because I am very sure now that what I want is phd and research.

although I didnot apply at that time, that's because I hadn't made up my mind to go for phd at that time.

but we can not repeat history or turn back time and make a different decision

so, just take it easy, those 2 years w/e won't hurt you anyway in your case.

if LZ thinks working for some time will add value to his future, just go for it.
