that's true. those two years do help me a lot.

but if you are prepared now, why not go directly to what you want and get graduate earlier.

different people different perspectives, no absolute right or wrong

it is really a tradeoff, ppl want to graduate earlier (esp. for us Chinese), but some w/e might help you discover some interesting research topics - some Chinese PhD students keep staying in the school, from BS to Master to PhD and have no w/e, all they can do is to read other ppl's research papers to find ideas they can work on, but these ideas tend to be marginal, coz...it is not a new idea already. This is what a prof. told me and he is Chinese.

well, I am not saying that working for some time definitely outweighs going directly and graduating earlier. I am just saying that everything has pros and cons. And you have to match that with you own utility function, in a financial term. And there are really a lot of dynamics affecting our decision - after all, spending 5 years in school is not a trivial thing when we are in the golden age of twenties.

We guys are so nice. I think everyone's idea is of some reason.

For me, first of all, I answered the company first. Their offer came at
a time when I had nothing on hands. So I should really appreciate them.

Secondly, I think so far we are really running too deep into 'marginal utility' .

I'm a person really easy to be satisfied, so I feel either way is good enough for me.

Even if a couple years' experience is not a bonus, I will experience another kind a life.
I'm sure that I love research and teaching. But why not make sure whether I hate work in companies?

Given I wasted so many years in PC games before, two years' delay is really not a harm for me.

based on my own experience, working experience helped a great deal. but don't stay out of school for too long if you want to pursue a doctoral degree in a top school.

hi xiaoyu, based on what you feel, it may be a good idea to work for 2 years first. Go ahead

Follow your heart is the right thing to do.

What neo1001 said is really great. I agree too. working experience does give me some fresh ideas, which I think will help in my future research. Anyway, it can at least give you some sense how theories work in real life and what is valuable for our society.

Nice discussing with you guys.

Wish the best luck to all of us!

It is amazing that you have such great accomplishment even if you wasted your time with the pc games...

Guess this post should have an end now.

Best luck with you all, especially those who still have nothing on hand.

Just want to let you know, on my first time of applying abroad two year ago, I got admission to UW-Madison in May, and before that I had nothing on hand.

So, be cool.

Hi guys,

Now I feel much better, and I will email Boston College later. When I look at what experienced this year, all my trouble is caused by lack of confidence. I should not take that job interview at first first, because I already decided to apply for PhD at that time. But I took it just because I had never interviewed and want to have a trial. (a bad reason)

And when I got the job offer, I became so worried of no PhD offer and no another job offer. That anxiety forced me to make my decision. I should have more confidence at that time.

Later I found job in industry is not so bad. All my professor support my decision, they all think two years' experience will make me a better teacher and a better idea contributor. So I made up my mind to work for a while first and reapply in a couple years.

Now I am anxious again after got these two interviews, still because of a lack of confidence. If now I change my mind again, the reason would be fear of no offer next time, "chance never come back again". But I think I should keep the last part of my confidence this time. Maybe you are right, jmxft. But I believe future chance depends more on my work in coming years. I believe if I work hard enough, I will be much stronger in a couple years. No matter what those professors think, at least I believe I will be a better researcher candidate.

So I quit, and best luck with you guys.

Nice analysis!

My opinion: work experience may not help your application to PhD program, but it will deninately help you a lot in your future career, in industries or in academic! So do not hesitate to enter industries if you get a good opportunity. It'll pay off some way.

Just one point to remember: w/e matters a lot to MBA application, but may not help much in application to PhD.

W/E might not help your application, but will definitely add to your life experience, help you  understand yourself better, and make you more mature, which is very important for  a PhD.
