1. People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

 

Although some people choose to directly enter work force after graduating from high school, there are increasing number of people go to college after graduating from high school. Why do these students attend college or university? Different people may have different reasons. In my opinion, there are following three common concerns when one decides to go to college.

 

First of all, people go to college to obtain different specialized knowledge which interests different individuals. Before entering college, students don’t have options to choose specific major in which they want to be deeply involved. For instance, a student who shows great interest in computer software has limited chance to learn such knowledge from school until he or she goes to college, since primary school or high school only teach general computer knowledge and basic computer skills. In college, however, students learn much deeper and more specific in their area. The above mentioned student can choose computer science as his or her major, and thus obtain specific knowledge of computer software.

 

Second of all, a college degree that is the evidence of specialization in certain area brings more job opportunities to the degree holder than a high school degree does. Employers often tend to choose the applicant who has college degree instead of the one who has not if other things are equal of these two applicants. In China, job market is relatively small compare to the huge population, and thus job competition is very fierce. A college degree can be advancement for one to get a better job.

 

Finally, the college degree can be used as bargaining power when an employee asks to increase salary or to promote. For example, in a company, if a certain employee is the only one with a bachelor degree in his or her department and he or she performs work very well, the degree may be the strength for him or her to get promotion, for college education represents systematical and integrated learning process, which is often thought very important of and beneficial to one’s career.

 

In conclusion, more and more people go to college to have further education because college education provides specialized knowledge in different area, because college degree brings more job opportunities to the degree holder, and because college degree may help people to get further promotion or salary increase.
