Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium transmitted to humans by deer ticks. Generally deer ticks pick up the bacterium while in the larval stage from feeding on infected white-footed mice. However, certain other species on which the larvae feed do not harbor the bacterium. Therefore, if the population of these other species were increased, the number of ticks acquiring the bacterium and hence the number of people contracting Lyme disease-would likely decline.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

正确答案: C

请教一到逻辑题,忘了是gwd哪一套的了

这个题怎么分析呢??

Q13:

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium transmitted to humans by deer ticks.  Generally deer ticks pick up the bacterium while in the larval stage from feeding on infected white-footed mice.  However, certain other species on which the larvae feed do not harbor the bacterium.  Therefore, if the population of these other species were increased, the number of ticks acquiring the bacterium―and hence the number of people contracting Lyme disease—would likely decline.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

  1. Ticks do not suffer any adverse consequences from carrying the bacterium that causes Lyme disease in humans.
  2. There are no known cases of a human’s contracting Lyme disease through contact with white-footed mice.
  3. A deer tick feeds only once while in the larval stage.

  4. A single host animal can be the source of bacteria for many tick larvae.
  5. None of the other species on which deer tick larvae feed harbor other bacteria that ticks transmit to humans.

Q11:

In 1992 outlaw fishing boats began illegally harvesting lobsters from the territorial waters of the country of Belukia.  Soon after, the annual tonnage of lobster legally harvested in Belukian waters began declining; in 1996, despite there being no reduction in the level of legal lobster fishing activity, the local catch was 9,000 tons below pre-1992 levels.  It is therefore highly likely that the outlaw fishing boats harvested about 9,000 tons of lobster illegally that year.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A.        The illegal lobster harvesting was not so extensive that the population of catchable lobsters in Belukia’s territorial waters had sharply declined by 1996.

B.        The average annual lobster catch, in tons, of an outlaw fishing boat has increased steadily since 1992.

C.        Outlaw fishing boats do not, as a group, harvest more lobsters than do licensed lobster-fishing boats.

D.       The annual legal lobster harvest in Belukia in 1996 was not significantly less than 9,000 tons.

E.        A significant proportion of Belukia’s operators of licensed lobster-fishing boats went out of business between 1992 and 1996.

   Answer: D

C is correct.

Since we know that the deer tick in the larval stage can have different foods, if there are others foods available when the moment it is fed, then it doesn't have to eat the bacterium. To be sure, C says that it only needs to be fed once. If any other food is in front of the lavae, then it won't pick up the baterium, and some human beings won't get infected.

但是为什么deer 不可以eat lcertain other species 很多次呢?正确答案确实是c,可能我没读懂文章

C says it can only eat food for one time.

   Answer: D

对D取非,如果96年合法的捕获量少于9000吨,那么什么比92年前水平低9000吨就不成立了。

如果96年合法1000吨,92年合法10000吨,那么减少的合法的不是9000吨吗?

Thank you for your inputs

I thought I've made a mistake.I want to explain choice C in another way which has distorted the meaning of my own.

What I want to say is that its a probability problem.

If deer tickes pick up the bacterium when it grows up ,the conclusion will be threathened as well.

But it seems not the meaning of the choice C.I thought choice C is also a solution, which means deer ticks only once feeded in larval stage,to that question.

I have fabricated a answer myslef ,hehe. But thank you MBZ .
