Thanks for your input.  I am in Shanghai but will try to make an on-campus interview.

I assume you are in Austin MBA Class of 2005.  I raised the question on motor company because Austin career center starts with the name of Ford.  Besides, I am in auto parts industry.

I will try GMAT again before the end of this year.

Keep in touch!  Robert

以下是引用feifeifeifei在2003-10-20 4:28:00的发言:

I would say your GMAT is not very competitive. However, if you have a very strong w/e, outstanding essays and excellent interview, you will still have a good chance. If you are in the U.S., I would strongly suggest you to have an on-campus interview.

It's definitely possible for you to land a job in motor companies, however, it's hard to give you an exact range of possibility. I would say UT does not have such a strong relationship with motor companies as with those energy companies. If you really want to get into motor industry, probably a school based in mid U.S., such as CMU, Michigan, would a better choice.

It's true that the career center in UT Austin is named after Ford, coz Ford gave a lot of $$$. And Ford is also one of regular recruiters on campus. However, since most of automobile companies are located in the mid-west, they usuallly recruite more from the schools in the neighbourhood.

If you want to focus on one specific industry, I would suggest you to apply schools in the same location.

feifeifeifeifei, what do you think of UT's finance field? I wonder where most of those concentrating on finance go after graduation. Do you have some direct information for us? thanks!

BTW, how you describe the teaching style in UT?

I, who happen to choose to concentrate on finance, am still trying to figure out where I should go upon graduation. Frankly, the job market now is not very good for finance person especially for an international student, although it is said the economy is picking up now. This year there are some guys who go to Wall Street or some IB/Consulting firms in Dallas or Houston office, but none of them are international studnets. Corporate finance position in some IT or Energy firms would be good.

I would recommend you to go to Northeasten area if you really want to focus on finance.  If you are an IT or Energy or Biotech guy, then UT Austin  is a perfect match. (I choose here mainly for family and finance reason.)

The teaching style in UT is a mix of lecture and case. It really depends on each professor's style.

The capitol of Texas, Austin is considered as a middle-size city in the U.S. It's also called "little silicon valley", because many high-tech companies set up either headquarters(e.g. Delll), or franchises(namely Motorola, HP, Nortel,...) here.

It's not very hard to find a part-time job. At least I know some students did. However, the question would be whether you can handle all the workloads together(study, intern or full-time job searching, and working).

Just took the GMAT yesterday, 680 Q50 V32. Do I have chance to apply for McCombs? I am in California. Had experience in the small high tech company as a software engineer. And currently working for my own tiny company providing Wi-Fi services. I want to concentrate on Entreprenuership or IT. How strong is the Entreprenuership program at McCombs? Should I retake the GMAT next month?

Thanks

Texas is well-known for its entreprenure spirit and it's said that Austin is an incubator of entrepeneures. Actually, Entreprenuer program in UT is a very good one, especially for small businesses. The ranking of Entreprenure in UT is around No. 7. We have real entreprenures to teach classes and they always turn out to be one of the most popular courses. I heard that the Enterpreneure association here constantly bring students to real world exposure. In addition to its strength in IT,  McCombs is a perfect match to you.

In McCombs' academic page, entreprenureship is one of the representative strengths. Here is something I quote from website:

Entrepreneurship:
Today, entrepreneurship is big business, but for two decades, McCombs has been at the forefront of this paradigm shift incubating new ventures and providing individual entrepreneurs with the tools they need for success. In continual refinement, our entrepreneurship program is consistently ranked among the top ten. The entrepreneurship curriculum includes courses on all aspects of the entrepreneurial venture including identifying entrepreneurial opportunities, commercializing intellectual property, selecting the advisors and board members, and launching and growing an entrepreneurial firm. MOOT CORP®, an international business plan competition, is a centerpiece of the McCombs curriculum. The competition draws teams from MBA programs all over the world; the winner receives a $100,000 investment to facilitate launching their venture. Students who specialize in entrepreneurship also benefit from many of the unique resources of the McCombs School and the Austin community including:

The Herb Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship - a center dedicated to funding teaching, research, and community outreach related to entrepreneurship
The Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst Center for Private Equity Finance - a center focused on exploring the expanding sector of venture capital
The Austin Technology Incubator - a highly successful business incubator focused on high-technology start-ups
The Capital Network - a network that matches investors with growing companies
IC2 Institute - an international think-tank for entrepreneurship

As for GMAT, if you have enough time, it won't hurt to retake your GMAT. But I did hear someone with GMAT 680 got the offer in the end with a very strong interview(on-campus one) performance.

Good luck!
