definitely B, this question is a simple one, dont get yourself confused.

The hypothesis needed to weaken:

the concentration of mass necessary to explain the speed of the whirling gas is not necessarily a black hole:  the concentration in M87 might be a cluster of a billion or so dim stars

Then the second paragraph talks about how to weaken this hypothesis all the time ( Plz note the topic sentence "The same hypothesis might have been applied to the galaxy NGC 4258, but the notion of such a cluster’s existing in NGC 4258 was severely undermined when astronomers measured the speed of a ring of dust and gas rotating close to the galaxy’s center."). So we should just look for some reason same as the 2nd paragraph or alternative reason (choice B). A is exactly opposite to the reasoning in 2nd paragraph so it support rather than weaken conclusion.

A似乎即能理解成支持：文章最后一段的证据是用来消弱是stars的。A可理解为削弱最后一段的证据，所以支持。

但A也可理解为削弱：不会被破坏à
            不是星群, 所以削弱结论

又想选C了，虽然B也是反驳star cluster,支持黑洞；但是C是文中第2段提到过的为什么反驳star cluster，就是NGC和M87一样，但是它里面如果是cluster的话，间距太小就会碰撞，所以就不是cluster，如果“C. The stars within many existing galaxies, such as NGC 4258, are more closely spaced than are the stars within the core of M87.”有更多的galaxies都有比M87密度大的这种情况，那么是star cluster的这个解释就会被削弱了

呵呵，这题好热闹。选B吧，俺不是牛牛，可俺领教过ETS的tricky

尝试理解一下啊：第2段用NGC4258的数据来反驳（undermine）第1段那些skeptics的解释，重点是第2段的最后那句。因为NGC4258类似M87，所以第2段反驳的理由就是：如果M87是cluster of stars,那么其包容的stars会相互碰撞（重力作用）而使这个cluster完蛋。

关于A，我这样理解：M87的cluster里面的stars的相互作用不会让cluster完蛋。

就是对第2段结论的否定。你说重力作用会使cluster完蛋，我偏要指：这个重力作用根本不是你说的那回事。否定之否定，就是支持（加强）那些skeptics。

一句话，从A可以得出结论：M87的cluster of stars 是存在的，只是那些stars的相互碰撞没有那末厉害，会把自己老巢爆掉。

那个B就太晦涩了，其实这就是ETS人心险恶的极大表现。

我对B的理解是这样的：这里注意：preclude the existence of certain other astronomical phenomena that have been observed at the center of M87）

如果skeptics的解释（cluster存在）正确，那么其他已观测到的天文现象（比如什么gas cloud，whirling之类的），就没有存在的理由啦。

呵呵，ETS够狠吧。浪费了我一上午的时间来研究这两句话，让我考试时在1分30秒之内选出正确答案，欺人太甚啦！
