think D is right because B is wordy with the what  clause and in D  past participal tense are used to say that the ice sheets had gone, that is now they does exist, which is accordent to the first part----Ice polished(刨蚀的)

还是很puzzled,existed in current temperate areas &existed in what are now temperate areas到底语义表达上有什么区别？

in what are now temperate areas=in some places that are now temperate areas =存在某地區，現在是溫和的，就是以前不溫和
