18. The value of a product is determined by the ratio of its quality to its price. The higher the value of a product, the better will be its competitive position. Therefore, either increasing the quality or lowering the price of a given product will increase the likelihood that consumer will select that product rather than a competing one.
Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the conclusion drawn above?
(A) It is possible to increase both the quality and the price of a product without changing its competitive position.
(B) For certain segments of the population of consumers, higher-priced brands of some product lines are preferred to the lower-priced brands.
(C) Competing products often try to appeal to different segments of the population of consumers.
(D) The competitive position of a product can be affected by such factors as advertising and brand loyalty.
(E) Consumers’ perceptions of the quality of a product are based on the actual quality of the product.
19. In January there was a large drop in the number of new houses sold, because interest rates for mortgages were falling and many consumers were waiting to see how low the rates would go. This large sales drop was accompanied by a sharp rise in the average price of new houses sold.
Which of the following, if true, best explains the sharp rise in the average price of new houses?
(A) Sales of higher-priced houses were unaffected by the sales drop because their purchasers have fewer constraints limiting the total amount they pay.
(B) Labor agreements of builders with construction unions are not due to expire until the next January.
(C) The prices of new houses have been rising slowly over the past three years because there is an increasing shortage of housing.
(D) There was a greater amount of moderate-priced housing available for resale by owners during January than in the preceding three months.
(E) Interest rates for home mortgages are expected to rise sharply later in the year if predictions of increased business activity in general prove to be accurate.

18.A? I think the answer is E.

19. A explain the reason that the average price of house rose while the number of sold house drop..

a 说:increse both can not changing the position.(this is feasible) ,那么increase one and low another ,the likelihood will increase
does it make sense?

Hi emonee,

I don't quite agree with your explanation..I think E is the answer, below is my reason.

first, we should know what is the evidence and conclusion of the argument.
evidence:
1. value of product= quality/price
2. the higher the value, the better will be its competitive position.
conclusion: either increasing the quality or decreasing the price, customer will be likely to choose the product.

In the passage, we notice a GAP between evidence and conclusion: value of product and customer's choosing the product..We can not safely conclude that the higher the value, the more likely that customers will choose the product UNLESS we know that customer can identify the value correctly. In other words, IF customers can't make sure which product has higher value, how can we conclude that customers will surely choose the product with higher value?

a is incorrect because it simply repeat the meaning of evidence 1..without mentioning the relation between evidence and conclusion, it can not support the conclusion..

e is correct because it fill the GAP between evidence and conclusion..without E, the conclusion can not safey be drew.
"the actual quality of the product" in choice is the same meaning of "the value of the product".

my two cents.

good luck!

The followings present my opinion:
1。in chioce e,an new but unnecessary word "actual quanlity" is presented to us.Let me ask you,how could it be if consumer's perception is based on not actual quality?
and E also give opponent a opportunity to say"no consumer can know the actual quality.'

2  I think chioce A strengthen  the evidence rather than simply repeat it.
Ratio=quality/price
both quality and price increase will not change the position. How could it be if the price is lowered?
ask:if x>2? the fact is x>3 then definitely x>2

thank you for your reply.

1。 E is wrong because it just explain unilateral reason---quality.
     From the question:
Bigger Premise:The higher the value of a product, the better will be its competitive position.
Small Premise:The value of a product is determined by the ratio of its quality to its price.
Quality cannot make the value of product by itself, so it is unilateral.
     B,C,D are weaken.
A is correct answer. You can use 取非法
You can refer the following post:

Hope that is helpful

2. A is correct.
