Scientists at Joymumu conducted an experiment and discovered that mice injected with substance T took longer to exit a maze compared to mice that were not injected. After the drug's effect wore off, it was found that both groups of mice could navigate the maze in the same amount of time.
The scientists concluded that injecting substance T does not affect the learning ability of mice, but only their memory capacity.
Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the scientists' conclusion?
(A) Mice injected with substance T showed no difference in their ability to learn new tasks compared to mice not injected with the substance.
(B) The time taken by mice to navigate the maze was found to be directly proportional to the dosage of substance T administered.
(C) Mice injected with substance T exhibited impaired performance in other memory-related tasks, such as recognizing objects they had previously encountered.
(D) The maze used in the experiment was designed to test the mice's spatial memory rather than their learning ability.
(E) After the effects of substance T wore off, mice that had been injected with the substance showed no residual impairment in their ability to navigate the maze.

A company, in an effort to reduce expenses on salaries and bonuses, converted a large portion of its full-time sales staff to part-time positions. As a result, more full-time employees were needed to handle the additional work that arose. However, despite this, the company's expenses on salaries and bonuses still decreased.
Which of the following, if true, best explains the reduction in the company's expenses on salaries and bonuses despite the need for more full-time employees?
(A) Part-time employees receive higher overtime pay compared to full-time employees.
(B) Part-time employees are compensated based on the number of hours they work.
(C) Part-time employees are not eligible for the same benefits as full-time employees, such as health insurance and paid vacation days.
(D) The company's sales volume increased significantly after the change in staffing strategy, requiring additional work hours from both part-time and full-time employees.
(E) The number of part-time employees hired was greater than the number of full-time positions that were converted to part-time.

The Fiesta de los Reyes Magos, Spain's most venerated holiday celebration, has instituted a multifaceted and rigorous review system to ensure the highest standards of quality, authenticity, and cultural significance in festivities across the Iberian Peninsula and its archipelagos. This comprehensive framework, overseen by the newly established Consejo Nacional de Celebraciones Tradicionales (CNCT), comprises a intricate network of committees, sub-committees, and specialized task forces, each tasked with evaluating and preserving various aspects of this centuries-old tradition while simultaneously adapting to the complex challenges posed by modernization, globalization, and evolving societal expectations.

The CNCT's organizational structure is a testament to the complexity of maintaining cultural heritage in the 21st century. At its core are four primary committees, each further divided into three sub-committees, creating a total of twelve distinct evaluation units. These units are supplemented by six specialized task forces that focus on emerging issues and cross-cutting themes. The entire system is governed by a Grand Council, composed of 15 eminent scholars, cultural leaders, and public figures, which provides strategic direction and acts as the final arbiter in cases of dispute or deadlock.

Committee 1: Historical and Religious Authenticity
1A: Biblical Narrative Fidelity
1B: Iconographic Accuracy
1C: Liturgical Integration

Committee 2: Parade Organization and Public Engagement
2A: Route Design and Crowd Management
2B: Float Construction and Artistic Merit
2C: Inclusivity and Accessibility Initiatives

Committee 3: Gift-Giving Customs and Children's Activities
3A: Traditional Gift Selection and Distribution
3B: Educational Programs and Cultural Transmission
3C: Child Safety and Well-being Protocols

Committee 4: Culinary Traditions and Local Adaptations
4A: Roscón de Reyes Standards and Innovations
4B: Regional Specialty Preservation
4C: Sustainable Gastronomy Practices

Specialized Task Forces:
- Digital Integration and Virtual Celebration Experiences
- Environmental Sustainability in Festival Practices
- Cross-Cultural Exchange and International Collaboration
- Economic Impact and Tourism Development
- Mental Health and Community Well-being
- Intangible Cultural Heritage Documentation

The approval process for municipal celebrations is multi-tiered and exceptionally rigorous. Proposals must first pass through relevant sub-committees, achieving a minimum approval rating of 75%. Successful proposals are then evaluated by the primary committee, requiring an 80% approval rate. Subsequently, at least two specialized task forces must endorse the proposal. Finally, the Grand Council reviews all recommendations, with the power to overturn decisions or demand further modifications.

This labyrinthine system has led to a notable stratification in the quality and scale of Reyes Magos celebrations across Spain. Major cities and tourist destinations, with their substantial resources and expertise, have flourished under the new regulations, reporting a 22% increase in attendance and a 31% boost in associated economic activity over the past three years. Conversely, smaller municipalities and rural areas have struggled to navigate the complex requirements, with only 43% of applications from towns with populations under 50,000 receiving full approval in the last review cycle.

The CNCT has implemented a weighted scoring system for evaluating proposals, taking into account factors such as historical significance, population size, available resources, and potential for cultural impact. This system uses a proprietary algorithm that assigns point values to various aspects of the celebration, with a maximum possible score of 1000 points. Proposals must achieve a minimum of 750 points to be considered for approval, with additional bonuses awarded for exceptional innovation or preservation efforts.

Recent data from the Spanish Ministry of Culture indicates that the economic impact of officially approved Reyes Magos celebrations has reached €3.7 billion in 2023, a 60% increase from 2018. However, this growth has been unevenly distributed, with the top 10 celebrations accounting for 45% of the total economic impact. This concentration has raised concerns about the potential homogenization of the festival and the marginalization of smaller, more traditional celebrations.

In response to these challenges, the CNCT has launched several initiatives aimed at supporting smaller municipalities, including a mentorship program pairing successful organizers with struggling communities, a grant program for innovative preservation efforts, and a digital resource platform for sharing best practices and historical research.

The complexity of the approval process has also led to the emergence of a new industry of consultants specializing in Reyes Magos celebration compliance. These experts, often former CNCT members or cultural anthropologists, command high fees for their services, further exacerbating the resource gap between large and small municipalities.

International interest in the Fiesta de los Reyes Magos has grown significantly, with UNESCO considering it for inclusion in its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This potential recognition has added another layer of scrutiny to the CNCT's work, as they must now balance local traditions with global standards of cultural preservation.

The CNCT's efforts have not been without controversy. Critics argue that the stringent regulations are stifling creativity and organic evolution of the tradition, while proponents maintain that such measures are necessary to prevent commercialization and cultural dilution. A recent survey of Spanish citizens revealed a complex tapestry of opinions, with 62% supporting the CNCT's mission in principle, but only 47% agreeing with the current implementation.

As the Fiesta de los Reyes Magos continues to evolve under this new regulatory framework, stakeholders across Spain are grappling with fundamental questions about the nature of tradition, the role of government in cultural preservation, and the balance between authenticity and innovation in a rapidly changing world.

B) Maximizing economic profits from the parade
C) Balancing traditional elements with accessibility and inclusivity
D) Focusing solely on crowd size and media coverage
E) Prioritizing international participation over local involvement

10. Based on the structure of the CNCT, what is likely to be true about the decision-making process for approving Reyes Magos celebrations?
A) Decisions are made quickly by a single authority
B) Only historical accuracy is considered in the approval process
C) The process involves multiple levels of evaluation and potential for appeals
D) Approval is automatic for any celebration that has occurred in the past
E) Economic impact is the sole criterion for approval

Having confirmed that there was a Gothic craze during the 1790s,we can now ask, further, why did it happen? Once again literary history provides us with a piece of received wisdom: the Gothic explosion was collateral damage from the French Revolution. The most famous version of this opinion comes from the Marquis de Sade, who argued that the Gothic novels of Radcliffe and Lewis were “the necessary fruits of the revolutionary tremors felt by the whole of Europe.” According to Sade’s view, the bloody horrors of the revolution pushed novelists to new extremes of imaginary violence, as they strove to compete with the shocking reality. William Hazlitt’s way of putting matters strikes me as more balanced. Radcliffe’s romances “derived part of their interest, no doubt, from the supposed tottering state of all old structures at the time.” Equating the Gothic with the French Revolution was a contemporary, rather than a retrospective phenomenon, as we can see from the currency of the smearing pun “the terrorist system of novel writing” employed by reviewers during the latter half of the 1790s (Clery, Rise of Supernatural Fiction,pp. 147–48). The reviewers knew full well that Gothic terror derived from the Burkean cult of the sublime, as the Dissenting critic Anna LaetitiaAikin famously explained in her essay, “On the Pleasure Derived from Objects of Terror.” The recourse to the sublime adopted by Radcliffe and her school was partly a desire to exploit contemporary aesthetic fashions and partly an attempt to pitch their work toward the high end of the literary market, for sublimity and terror were associated with tragedy and epic, the two most prestigious literary forms – a strategy that would later pay off handsomely for William Wordsworth. By linking Burke’s terror with Robespierre’s in the limited case of romances by women writers, critics stripped the Gothic of its high literary pretensions, implicitly accusing its authors of being social incendiaries, while figuring them as literary sansculottes: in other words, as a semiliterate mob. One needs to be careful about overstating the case. The adjective “terrorist” smeared, but it also condescended by making “terror” writers the object of a risible pun. The smear worked, not because writers of “hobgoblin romance” were dangerous, but because they palpably were not.

1. According to the passage, which of the following best describes the relationship between the Gothic craze of the 1790s and the French Revolution?
(A) The Gothic craze was a direct result of the violence and bloody horrors of the French Revolution.
(B) The Gothic craze was influenced by the perceived instability of old structures during the French Revolution, but was also shaped by other factors such as contemporary aesthetic fashions.
(C) The Gothic craze was primarily an attempt by authors to exploit contemporary aesthetic fashions and pitch their work toward the high end of the literary market, with little connection to the French Revolution.
(D) The Gothic craze was a deliberate attempt by authors to compete with the shocking reality of the French Revolution by creating even more violent and terrifying narratives.
(E) The Gothic craze was a reflection of the revolutionary tremors felt by Europe, but had little impact on the literary market or aesthetic fashions of the time.

2. The passage suggests that the recourse to the sublime adopted by Radcliffe and her school was motivated by:
(A) a desire to exploit contemporary aesthetic fashions and pitch their work toward the high end of the literary market
(B) an attempt to distance themselves from the violence and terror of the French Revolution
(C) a belief that the French Revolution had stripped the Gothic of its high literary pretensions
(D) a fear of being associated with the semiliterate mob of literary sansculottes
(E) a desire to create a new literary form that would compete with tragedy and epic in terms of prestige

3. The critics' use of the phrase "the terrorist system of novel writing" in the latter half of the 1790s served to:
(A) praise the Gothic novelists for their ability to evoke terror and compete with the shocking reality of the French Revolution
(B) condemn the Gothic novelists as social incendiaries and literary sansculottes, while also belittling their literary pretensions through a dismissive pun
(C) argue that the Gothic novelists were directly influenced by the aesthetic theories of Edmund Burke and his cult of the sublime
(D) suggest that the Gothic novelists were attempting to create a new literary form that would be as prestigious as tragedy and epic
(E) acknowledge the skill and talent of the Gothic novelists in exploiting contemporary aesthetic fashions and pitching their work toward the high end of the literary market

4. The passage implies that the effectiveness of the smear "terrorist" when applied to Gothic novelists was due to:
(A) the genuine danger posed by the Gothic novelists as social incendiaries and literary revolutionaries
(B) the fact that the Gothic novelists were, in reality, not dangerous at all, making the term a condescending pun
(C) the ability of the Gothic novelists to evoke terror in their readers, much like the terrorists of the French Revolution
(D) the association of the Gothic novelists with the semiliterate mob of literary sansculottes
(E) the perceived connection between the Gothic novelists and the aesthetic theories of Edmund Burke and his cult of the sublime

5. The Marquis de Sade and William Hazlitt's views on the relationship between the Gothic craze and the French Revolution differed in that:
(A) Sade believed the Gothic novels were a necessary consequence of the revolution, while Hazlitt saw them as deriving only part of their interest from the perceived instability of the time
(B) Sade argued that the Gothic novelists were attempting to compete with the shocking reality of the revolution, while Hazlitt believed they were primarily exploiting contemporary aesthetic fashions
(C) Sade saw the Gothic novels as a reflection of the revolutionary tremors felt by Europe, while Hazlitt dismissed any connection between the two
(D) Sade believed the Gothic novelists were social incendiaries and literary revolutionaries, while Hazlitt saw them as merely attempting to pitch their work toward the high end of the literary market
(E) Sade argued that the Gothic craze was a direct result of the violence and bloody horrors of the revolution, while Hazlitt believed it was more influenced by the perceived instability of old structures during the time

6. The passage suggests that sublimity and terror were associated with which of the following literary forms?
(A) Gothic novels and romances
(B) Tragedy and epic
(C) Revolutionary narratives and political pamphlets
(D) Burkean aesthetic theories and philosophical treatises
(E) Sentimental novels and moral tales

7. According to the passage, Anna Laetitia Aikin's essay "On the Pleasure Derived from Objects of Terror" argued that:
(A) Gothic terror was a necessary consequence of the French Revolution and the bloody horrors of the time
(B) Gothic novelists were primarily concerned with exploiting contemporary aesthetic fashions and pitching their work toward the high end of the literary market
(C) the recourse to the sublime adopted by Radcliffe and her school was an attempt to compete with the shocking reality of the French Revolution
(D) the terror evoked by Gothic novels was derived from the aesthetic theories of Edmund Burke and his cult of the sublime
(E) the Gothic craze was a reflection of the revolutionary tremors felt by Europe and the perceived instability of old structures during the time

8. The passage implies that the critics who employed the smearing pun "the terrorist system of novel writing":
(A) genuinely believed that the Gothic novelists were a threat to social stability and literary standards
(B) were attempting to strip the Gothic of its high literary pretensions and associate it with the semiliterate mob of literary sansculottes
(C) were acknowledging the skill and talent of the Gothic novelists in exploiting contemporary aesthetic fashions and pitching their work toward the high end of the literary market
(D) were arguing that the Gothic craze was a direct result of the violence and bloody horrors of the French Revolution
(E) were praising the Gothic novelists for their ability to evoke terror and compete with the shocking reality of the French Revolution
