19世纪美国风景画，光线派聚焦于氛围和光线。普遍认为他们的画作注重精神和宁静。此前的美国艺术家大多描绘自然的巨大力量。而光明派的氛围用宁静的光线，这把观众带入transcendentalism，也就是他们眼中的世界理想的版本。

这个观点没有确定transcendental 氛围的重要性。光明派里的其它要素，如把自然风景用光表现表示的是大自然被人类驯服了。他们画作里最理想的氛围不是发掘人类对大自然的反应，而是屏蔽掉这个情绪。比如面对大自然的惊叹啥啥的。

一个批评：Lane 作为光明派代表，画港湾的时候认为精神派在1850年代的发展的极广。
1850-60年代是美国贸易快速发展的年代。
1848-65年代，lane住的地方能直接看到XXX港口，他还到处去画港口，而且还画哪里的船--船是贸易的象征。

lane画带船的港湾，大自然也是一副田园风光，而非未开发的原野。
对lane来说，大海只是运河，贸易通道，而非自带力量。海是被驯化了的。
cole 是lane前辈，cole的海，自带力量。

我认为（作者观点）lane 的大海表现的是人类活动的背景。lane的大自然在人类面前低眉顺眼，光也如此。发展（经济贸易？）是光明派的秘密信息。他们把大自然画、渲染成为人类贸易服务的环境而已。
