Metal found in lake of PA : first evidence for pre-Colonial metalsmithing
This finding can help recreate the past, e.g., Inca rulers imposed taxes, from copper to silver
Broze artifact previously found in PA, 1000AD, after the fall of Wari or Hurry empire era
However, question : the bronze artifact comes from Ande or trade with costal village?
Curious emergence of metallurgy
To create metallurgy history, scientists collected the samples from LP, then measured the concentration of lead, copper, zinc, silver, etc
The metals are each linked with certain metallurgy practices, e.g., the rise in copper and zinc is linked with lead.
Scientists used dating method to know when the metals were deposited.
Scientists found : the earliest metal, aimed at copper, 1000AD – 1200AD, after the fall of Wari empire, before the Inca empire.
Cooke said : it is strange that the onset of copper just after the fall of Wari empire, not during the large empire.
Transition to silver
Cooke said : Wari disappeared due to the drought, then the metallurgy emerged, but we don’t know where does it come from.
After 1450 AD, transfer from copper to silver, Inca empire era, imposed taxes to villagers.
Cooke said : the aim to recreate the history of metallurgy, the analysis is continuing.
