Expert : all modern hummingbirds evolved in South America, then spread to North America, but never in Europe.
New world = south and north America.
Now, 30 million years old fossils, modern hummingbirds, found in Germany
Question : where early hummingbirds evolved and why became extinct in Europe
Fossils in Old world (Europe), a possible hummingbirds turned up a 49 million years old rocks
Another two incomplete fossils, 30 million years old
Not clear if they are modern
Mayr considered all three fossils shared common ancestors with modern ones, but not all experts agreed
The forth fossils, the first modern fossil
Other experts disagreed with it. The similarities with modern hummingbirds are too superficial.
Mayr said : E (the forth fossil) demonstrates that modern hummingbirds evolved main features in Old World (Europe). This can explain the followers that adapted to hovering birds. The plant evolved with hummingbirds and were pollinated by hummingbirds.
Mayr said : the songbirds outcompeted hummingbirds so hummingbirds were extinct.
Author : the four fossils suggested that the hummingbirds evolved in Europe and then went to America. But because of the scarce evidence, it was just the speculation. New discoveries are needed to answer to this question. Old world (Europe) is a new place to find evidence.
