板块构造也为石油和天然气的成熟提供了压力容器，由于板块的移动带动这些沉积层移动，这个过程可能会持续百万年，因为这些碳氢化合物比水要活跃，他们会最终停在表面，但是其他一些因素，板块之间的飘移及重装会将成熟的石头释放出来，他们在上移过程中被捕获，成为石头和天然气的存储地。
