19世纪末，美国经历了空前的科技创新和工业扩张。铁路、蒸汽引擎、工厂纷纷出现。西部似乎有数不尽的资源。人们离开农场移民到扩张中的城市，劳动力也由能工巧匠变为流水线作业工人。从agrarian到工业经济的转变创造了很多被称为robber barons的所谓工业巨人和金融家利用纵横交错的整合来创造利润和垄断。随之而来的是人们生活水平、人均收入和生产力超过了除英国之外的国家。（弊）但并不是所有都雨露均沾，贫民窟的不断扩大被腐败的政治家剥削用工作机会来换取投票。人们在长时间低薪且不安全的工厂以创造大量廉价的产品。

二十世纪早期，一些受过教育的中产阶级打破了这种腐败和经济侵略，认为有责任去重塑美国。1900-1918，在这些先驱的带领下，向工业化和城市化的问题发起战斗。
    法律上，颁布了禁止童工、设立最低工资、合规的工作条件等法律，
    政治上，增加了民众选举政治领袖的权力。罗斯福限制垄断以保证竞争。

P1 - During the final decades of the 19th century, America experienced unprecedented technological innovation and industrial expansion.
       As people left their farms and immigrants arrived to work in the urban centers, they felt chained to the machines.
       Great fortunes were amassed by the speculative industrialists and financiers.
       America's standard of living and per capita income and production exceeds any other nation excluding Britain.
       Disease-ridden slums grew larger.
       Corrupt political bosses exploited immigrants with the promise of work in exchange for their votes.
       Men, women and children worked long hours for low pay in unsafe factories.
P2 - By the early 20th century, many middle-class citizens were disturbed by the problems and felt a social obligation to reshape the American landscape.
        From 1900 to 1918, the progressives led a movement to battle the problrms of industrialization and urbanization.
        Legislation was enacted to protect workers and gave the public increased control to elect political leaders.
        Roosevelt extended the government branches to curtail monopolistic practices.
        Some industries became federally regulated.
        => this precedent changed the expectations of the role that government would play in society and inspired the recover from the Depression of 1929.
