1st: since prehistoric times, the average volume of human brain has decreased. But some scientists argued that the ratio of musculature and brain is roughly equaled. Prehistoric modern human has bigger musculature than us, hence they needed larger brain to control musculature.
2nd: however, skeletal measurements show the ratio also decreased during certain period. Many genetic mutations affect brain development. And less cognitively demanding in agricultural societies than hunter gatherer societies. But shrinkage has occurred worldwide.
3rd: a more plausible explanation is that our ancestors domesticated themselves. Changes easily spread by selective pressure. |
