呼唤大神!求教关于despite the fact that的用法

之间忘了在哪里看的了，说despite the fact that这个用法不是优选，当时语法很差迷迷糊糊也没看懂
今天做一题发现正确选项是
Despite the fact that the lead attorney and his assistant entered the courthouse with police escort,
they were manhandled by an aggressive crowd of reporters that bombarded the attorney with
questions and injured him so seriously that he needed immediate medical attention.
那么这个用法是本身没有问题，还是说这个正确选项是通过比较选项，排除法做出来的呢
附原题：（来自SC700-800，不过话说这个习题集似乎是曼哈顿出的。。不知道参考价值怎样）

語法沒問題，語意也沒問題，不過想要表句子與句子的轉折的話，用although是否會更好？
despite是介詞，介詞強調的重點是其後面的賓語本身。
although是連詞，強調的重點是S+V整個從句。

給樓主延伸思考：
because / because of 的差異為何？
Like+N / As + 句子 的差異為何？

從正確句子裡找出以上這些用法，並且做歸納，概念就會非常清楚了～

从上面大神发的MANHATTAN链接来看，despite+ing并不一定是错的，只是这个ing是不是gerund的问题
