最近有不少CDer发email询问GMAT、TOEFL分数和工作经验对申请的影响以及与申请有关的其他问题,在此做一个答复,谈谈我个人的看法。
(1)关于GMAT
In terms of GMAT, Ivey official website says "We prefer candidates with a GMAT score of at least 620 or an 80% average over two years of their undergraduate program. The GMAT test is only one part of the application that is considered by the admissions committee. Successful candidates to the MBA program demonstrate significant achievements in their academic performance, career experience, extra curricular activities and essay questions in addition to a strong GMAT result."
To be honest, a very low GMAT would possibly put applicants in a disadvantaged position. If it is possible, those applicants are strongly recommended to re-write GMAT. However, GMAT is not all! If you could differentiate yourself through other application materials, especially the essays and interview, you still have a good opportunity to get accepted.
(2)关于TOEFL
Generally speaking, 600+ is a must. To be honest, I don't know any Chinese student at Ivey who has a TOEFL lower than 620. An official response from Ivey would be "you are encouraged to apply and your application will be evaluated as a whole". However, personally, I would not suggest you to apply with a TOEFL score of 570. It is hard to justify your English communication skills with such a TOEFL.
(3)关于录取的philosophy
Generally speaking, Ivey values solid work experience and strong communication skills. This is because Ivey uses a case teaching method. In every Ivey class you will see students discussing cases under the guide of professors. Basically no lecture is given in any Ivey course and no "correct" anwser is expected in any case. With this method, students learn from their peers as well as from professors. That is why Ivey values work experience and communication skills more than other schools do.
Keep in mind, Ivey seeks students who have solid work experience and good communication skills. This is decided by the nature of Ivey case teaching method. If you could justify these two points, the negative impact of GMAT will be offset.
(4)关于申请时间
Starting from 2006, Ivey is going to change its MBA program to a 12-month program. There would be two intakes in 2006, one in May and one in October. Three rounds of application deadlines are Dec 15 2005, Feb 1 2006, Apr 1 2006 for May intake and May 1, July 3, Sept 1 for Oct intake. http://www.ivey.uwo.ca/mba/admissions/app_process.htm
