不理解那句话也可以解题的。题目说成年的white pine繁密茂盛， 遮住阳光， 幼年树苗无法生长。如果茂密森林里的white pine全是成年的，他们定是在不被成年white pine的遮掩下生成的（幼苗一起生长），它们的树龄差不超过the length of time it takes a white pine to grow to maturity (a).
