Responding to the public’s fascination with-and sometimesundue alarm over-possible threats from asteroids, a scaledeveloped by astronomers rates the likelihood that a particular asteroid or comet may collide with Earth.
A.a scale developed by astronomers rates the likelihoodthat a particular asteroid or comet may
B.a scale that astronomers have developed rates howlikely it is for a particular asteroid or comet to
C.astronomers have developed a scale to rate how likelya particular asteroid or comet will be to
D.astronomers have developed a scale for rating thelikelihood that a particular asteroid or comet will
E.astronomers have developed a scale that rates thelikelihood of a particular asteroid or comet that may

Ron
In choosing between C and D, first consider the intended meaning. We're interested in the current likelihood that the comet/asteroid will strike Earth in the future..
In other words, How likely is it NOW that a comet/asteroid WILL STRIKE Earth?

This distinction comes into play when you look at the verbs in C and D. Different verbs.

C mentions "how likely a comet/asteroid will be". Nope. The likelihood is something that exists now, not in the future. (That's the definition of "likelihood": How probable does this event seem right now?
There's no "future likelihood" here. In the future, the event either happens or doesn't happen.)

D mentions the likelihood (as measured at present) that a comet/asteroid will collide (in the future) with Earth. That makes sense.

In 1981 children in the United States spent an average of slightly less than two and a half hours a week doinghousehold chores;

by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week.
A.     chores; by 1997 they had spent nearly six hours a week
B.     chores; by 1997 that figure had grown to nearly six hours aweek
C.     chores, whereas nearly six hours a week were spent in 1997
D.     chores, compared with a figure of nearly six hours a weekin 1997
E.      chores, that figure growing to nearly six hours a week in1997

Trans World Entertainment Corporation, which owns the Record Town and Saturday Matinee retail chains, announced that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed

A. that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores are poor, they will be closed

B. it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which accounted for its poor sales

C. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores because of poor sales

D. to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to one-fourth of its stores

E. having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of its stores will be closed
Ron
is this problem really from GMATPrep?
it doesn't look like an official problem. you would want "that" here, as noted above. also, "it would be closing" would be better than "it was closing", since this was a future event at the time of the announcement.

does anyone have a screen shot to prove that this problem is, indeed, official?

hmm. ugly.

the two complaints that I posted above still stand, but, as we state here quite often, we simply have to accept the fact that this problem is officially correct. ugh.

in any case, although all of the answer choices are at least somewhat ugly, choice (c) is still the best of them -- and, apparently, gmac doesn't require that you use the word "that" between "announce" and a clause.

to the posters on this thread -- it seems as though most of the complaints are about choice (c), but no one seems to have posted a choice that he/she thinks is better. did any of you think that one of the other choices was better?

Sound can travel through water for enormous distances, prevented from dissipating its acoustic energy as a result of boundaries in the ocean created by water layers of different

C.  its acoustic energy prevented from dissipating by
D.  its acoustic energy prevented from being dissipated as a result of
E   preventing its acoustic energy from dissipating by
