2. No one is admitted for a single reason, and no one is rejected for a single reason.
“It’s a selection process. There aren’t rules like if you have this score you will be in and if you have that score you will be out. Selection is thoughtful and not rule-based. It’s not mad cap or chaotic. We are making selection decisions. And it’s about the class. It’s not about whether I think John is a better person than Jim. It’s trying to get this wonderful salad going in the class and what ingredients does John bring and what does Jim bring.
We spend a lot of time imagining the kinds of conversations John would have with Jim if they were in the same section. What would they learn from each other? What would they ask each other? HBS is an amazing opportunity for conversations that you won’t ever have again in your life in terms of the richness of the kinds of people who are all heads-up and want to make a difference in the world and come from way different backgrounds. So we spend a lot of time thinking about what those conversations will be like. Those are fun speculations to have.”

我也同意楼上no one is rejected for a single reason, 估计不是某个数据和某一点问题,整体可能不是很fit,当然也有运气因素,也许就单纯是今年的pool特别强。
The ugly truth is that HBS, GSB & Wharton weigh the prestige of your undergrad school & company way more than you think. I'm not talking about rarities here which obviously are everywhere. But take a look at the % of admitted people who went to top undergrad schools and blue chip companies (i.e. companies headlined on WSJ on a daily basis). Luck is essential in the process as well.
MBA is a plus not a necessity. You might have better choices not going to schools, even the top ranked ones.
Last but not least, unfairly and unfortunately, being an Asian male sucks at this moment for things like this. On the positive side, Asians are rising, and it won't take long for us to have much much better representations in top ranked schools and the management level of global companies.
