初来乍到，想申请PhD in Finance~ 请各位高人指教该如何定位

看了很多关于申请的帖子，还是不知道自己这样的背景该如何定位。所以，想请教大家帮忙看一下我的背景，看该选择什么样的学校~谢谢了~

目标：申请PhD in Finance
背景：本科：加拿大的一所学校，专业是Actuarial Science and Statistics, GPA: 3.6
          研究生：同一所学校，专业：Statistics， GPA：78% 左右
          G/T：目前还没有考过
          研究经验：做过2个RA，但是都是偏生物统计方面的
          兴趣：金融risk management，asset pricing之类的


想请教一下，我这样的背景应该把自己定位在什么样的学校？在此谢谢大家了~

我觉得前20希望不大，除非你有真正意义的牛推，就是指你的推荐人是学术界well known的学者并且与相关学校的教授熟识。
我觉得定位tier3-4比较合理，我上面说了，50名以后的学校都试试，重点放在排名100左右的，具体排名参考UTD或者ASU的排名。
看样子你还是对形势估计不足啊，不过不试试永远不知道。

LS太乐观了。
硕士GPA是个弱项，但应该不至于致命，主要还是相关课程的成绩。
50名以后所有的学校都可以考虑，如果有牛腿前面的学校可以试试。

你也很乐观，统计硕士哪门课不想关？9楼明显消遣人的。没有金融背景，每年像楼主这样申请者大把的。无优势可言。



楼主好好去申请生统。你生统申到top50的概率也不大。

那想请教是不是冲冲看的学校是摆在排名20左右的学校？还是这样也太难？

你有相当的统计方面的背景，finance特别喜欢；而且也不怎么在意GPA. 我认为你GMAT上700，怎么都可以进top 10.

Couldn't agree with you. GPA is the king; GMAT is nothing; b/g in Stats would help a bit, but stats is only a tool for doing research, still the idea and knowledge in finance are the key; i would say top10 in US is impossible (i am sorry i do not want to lie to you), so better focus on Canada, since you did undergrad there.

Your Master GPA is too low to satisfy most of the phd programs admission criteria (I mean phd programs in north ameircan, including canada). Basically, 3.5/4.0 (for graduate work) is the bottom line for being considered for admission, whereas 3.8 is safe. I think 78% is far less than 3.5, right?

Better consider schools in Australia or UK perhaps.

I think it is around 3.00.
By the way, is it true that my master's GPA ruined my every chance to get an offer from universities in US? My undergraduate grade or RA experience don't account for anything?

I would say the chance is very tiny; probably my saying sounds too straightforward, but i believe it is the fact to the best of knowledge.

You are from SFU. right? Perhaps you may try its phd finance program, since you did all of your previous degrees there, which is to some extent to your benefit to apply. For US, better do not waste your money and time on it.
