Following our presentation at the 2015 International Rock Art Conference hosted by IFRAO in Cáceres, Spain, this paper focuses on the scientific study of rock art. Future publications will explore petroglyphs on open-air outcrops and several stelae west of the Erges River. Particular emphasis is placed on two cyclopean structures, Tapada da Foz and Foz do Ribeiro das Taliscas, located in the flood zone of the Erges River valley. These structures, especially the first, which dates back to pre-history, house pecked petroglyphs and incisions. We employed photogrammetric techniques alongside the morphological residual model (MRM) for a three-dimensional representation of the artwork in these shelters. This method offers advantages over traditional recording techniques, such as three-dimensionality, enhanced contrast, objectivity, versatility, and portability, addressing previous challenges in identifying and documenting rock art. The Erges River, originating from the Serra de Gata in the Central Iberian Cordillera, forms a natural border between Portugal and Spain over a 50 km stretch. It traverses metasedimentary rocks from the Neoproterozoic era and breaks through Armorican Quartzite near Monfortinho, later flowing through Tardi-Variscan granitoids, creating spectacular river canyons. The river's adjacent plateau features Eocene-Pliocene detrital deposits, forming flat terrains. This river, which exhibits torrential flows in winter and minimal flow in summer, remains undammed except near its confluence with the Tagus River, where it is submerged by the Cedillo dam. The valley's minimal human impact has preserved its natural beauty, leading to its partial integration into the International Tagus Natural Park and the Naturtejo Geopark, highlighting geomonuments like the canyons at Monfortinho and Salvaterra do Extremo. Despite consideration in the National Plan for Dams with High Hydroelectric Potential in 2007, the Erges River was not selected for development. Archaeological surveys conducted independently on both the Spanish and Portuguese banks in 2005 and 2007 identified 16 prehistoric rock art sites, including natural and constructed shelters. The rock art, predominantly anthropomorphic figures and circular shapes, suggests a symbolic boundary along the river. Additional motifs include pecked 'clouds', cupules, incised lines, potential zoomorphic figures, and undefined motifs. Notably, two panels with red paintings, featuring points in regular sequences and a sun-shaped figure, were discovered in a natural shelter in the Segura canyon, enriching the regional graphic repertoire. What is the primary focus of this paper? A. The geographical features of the Erges River. B. The hydroelectric potential of the Erges River. C. The discovery of red paintings in the Segura canyon. D. The scientific study and documentation of rock art. E. The challenges in identifying rock art. What method was used to document the rock art? A. Traditional sketching techniques. B. Photogrammetry and the morphological residual model. C. Laser scanning. D. Direct tracing on paper. E. Photography. What does the Erges River primarily flow through? A. Granitoids of the Tardi-Variscan orogeny. B. Eocene-Pliocene detrital deposits. C. Armorican Quartzite. D. Metasedimentary rocks of the Neoproterozoic. E. A combination of all the above. What was the outcome of the Erges River's evaluation in the National Plan for Dams with High Hydroelectric Potential? A. It was selected for immediate development. B. It was recognized for its natural beauty and preserved. C. It was not selected for investment. D. It was partially dammed. E. It was designated for future evaluation. What symbolic representation is most consistently observed in the rock art along the Erges River? A. The daily life and activities of prehistoric communities. B. The natural and animal life prevalent in the region. C. A symbolic demarcation that might represent territorial or cultural boundaries. D. The depiction of celestial bodies and astronomical phenomena. E. The representation of water sources and their importance to ancient societies.
