advice for MBA students who are looking for jobs

Job searching is always a challenge after graduation.
But I have some advice for MBA students who are looking for jobs.

1. Avoid the illusion of only jobs with amazing package
Some people might have illusion that once he graduated from business school. The jobs with 130k or even 160k is waiting for them. It might be right in some way, but just for very fewer people. Some of my classmates in USC got consulting jobs very soon. But the truth is - before they joined business school, they worked in consulting firms. If you didn't come from those industries before MBA and didn't have 3.8 GPA, don't spend all your effort only in those jobs which provide more than 130k annual package.

2. Don't forget your original network
It's much more useful than your NEW network, especially in recession period. Obviously, people who've known you longer is more willing to refer the jobs to you since they have more opportunity to observe your performance and trust your credibility more. In addition, they are willing to help you in this bad time than new friends who actually prefer to give more opportunities to their own old friends.

3. Think beyond the boundaries if you didn't want to be back to your previous industry
To minimize the dependency of fortune about job searching - don't look forward jobs in those industries in down side but the up trend. In 2009 in USA, though many industries are squeezing, the health care industry is growing. As a MBA student, you know where to get those info and how to analyze the sectors in GDP. You can tell the health care sector or some other sectors are growing in USA which might be the choice within your previous industries. Besides, look beyond the boundaries. The "infrastructure" companies like Caterpillar still need talents people to help them develop business in emerging countries. It might be another choice for MBA students.

4. Don't just follow what people think it's right but not your guts
Do what you like more than people think it's right to do. Investing Bank, consulting firms, and fortune 100 attract people's eyeballs and create WOW in the first impression. But eventually, the job you do like is the job you can do for your whole life. No matter how much they pay you, a job you truly embraced can help you reach your personal objective more easily.
