Consulting related courses at MMPA are taught by Prof. Kevin Yousie(a business consulting firm partner, Western Alumni), Prof. Varouj Aivazian (former chair for U of T Department of Economics) and Dr. Aida Wahid (Harvard Phd in Business Strategy). Consulting education here takes advantage of U of T’s strength in quantitative finance and financial economics. That’s why Prof. Aivazian normally spends 6 classes on economic theories underlying those popular business strategy models, developing you a good habit of analyzing the fundamentals of the client’s company or the industry it played in first before you jumped to those theoretical strategy models made up by Harvard professors. As I mentioned that U of T has strength in quantitative finance and financial economics, the consulting education here absolutely has something relates to. Valuation is a key component that professor believes MMPA student shall be competent in. Not all students go to Bain or other consulting firms anyways. Some of them may join advisory team within the Big Four, providing transaction services in M&A for clients. Therefore, MMPA program prepares you both the capability of drawing big pictures for the client and the expertise to make these wishes happen. We have case competitions in the summer and you will have the opportunity to act on either side. Try to find out which side fits you well. (Sales person type or an expert )
For me, I’m just an accountant. I have nothing to do with the consulting business but I received this level of education as an average student. From my understanding, this is how MMPA works for student with career goal in consulting. I am sure that you will develop more thoughts, understanding and expertise better than me after completing these courses . I don’t know how student from Schulich, even from Macc program has that kind of blind confident that MMPA teaches nothing but general business knowledge. They only have one chance to take a master degree though. If you want to receive the best consulting education in Canada, just apply to Ivey Business School at Western. They are top tier for sure, in the education, in alumni network and in the job market. For other schools, each of them has a strength. Key words for U of T are “Quantitative Finance” and “Financial Economics”. But remember that only less than 20 MMPA students finally go to a career in consulting or finance after graduation. If you would like to be a majority, just look for another program.
