其次,看到同一时期的美国大众科学杂志的介绍,里面主要介绍了Kuroda的实验方法。手打贡献一下:
scientist uncertain if Tortoise is Deaf or Stupid
Popular Science 1925.10
Tortoises are either deaf or stupid? Most water snakes cannot hear at all, but land snakes often have acute hearing. These interesting conclusions were reached by Ryo Kuroda of the College of Niigata, Japan, after extensive experiments with reptiles.
To test the tortoise’s hearing, scraps of meat were laid on a board copper plate. When the tortoise attempted to snap up a bit, a bell was rung and at the same time an electric current was passed through the plate. The idea was that if the tortoise could hear, it would soon associate the ringing of the bell with the shock. But repeated experiments showed that the ringing of the bell meant nothing to the animal. It snapped for the food, anyway, and was just as surprised by the shock each time.
