Sochi Winter Olypmic has invested 51 billion dollars, much more than London Olympic
Many economists agree that investment in Olympics is not worth.
2012 London Olympic costs UK 15 billion USD. Reports say it earns 1 billion revenue, and forecasts billions of income in the future.

t2 t3  [2:01] [2:45]
why so many countries are eager to host Olympics?
Beijing costs nearly 40 billions USD, but the tourism did not grow as it expected, the hotel booking rate dropped during the games. Many sports fileds were abandoned after the game.

Main reason:
1 popularity. people are in favor of such big international event. Most of the people in those countries who have host Olympics support such event.
2 governments have  their own intent. Beijing wants to show off the world its ability of organizating international event, and its economic power.UK want to bring back London the reputation and status lost. Japan wants to boost its lucklaster economy.

Risk: Rio 2016 Olympics has arose many protests and dissents.
The seven years gap between the announcement of decision and the day games begin often leave the politicians who once supported and helped the government to win the game no chance to see the result. And whether the games is a success or not is unknown, the successor of the government will have to take the blame or enjoy the glory.

t4 [3:01]
Five years after Beijing Olympics
China did show its face to the world, and wowed the whole world. It costs 40 billion USD.
But return? Not that pleasant. 1992 Barcelona saw a triple tourism growth after Olympics, but China? tourism continued to drop due to tightened visa requirements.
The expensive Bird's Nest and Water Cubic were just empty afte the games, and continued to lost money everyday. The government is unable to make it a profitable place after the game.

t5  [3:16]
Beijing improved the air quality during the games dramatically by implementing strict rules and ordinance. Perhaps that's the only benefit of the games. After the game, air quality get worse. But the cars limit is still on the way.

Spirit? It's all about politics. There's nothing more changed after the games about China and its government.

Worth it? China did show the world its ability to push and achieve the limit. But the memory was never the center of everyday's life when the game was over. The past glory was seldom talked on the hottest social network weibo. But the government has demonstrated to its detractors on its ability to face the air pollution, traffic jam, food safety. That seems to be enough for the authorities.

t6 [3:14]
UK tourism has grown since 2012 London Olympics, 4% increase in foreign visitors, 12% increase in spending, 89% increase in hotel occupancy. So government attributed the economy recovery t the booming tourim.

However, it is not the case. The net impact of tourism on economy is valued by the trade deficit between foreigner coming to Briton and Briton spending in foreign countries. Although many foreign people come to Briton and that boosts the tourism, but more Briton people go to foreign countries and spend more. The trade deficit remains stable, and even a little decrease.
Tourism is not qualified to contribute to the economic recovery.

Obstacle  [5:54]
Sochi Olympic will boost Russia' economy?
Some quotes from history exprience:
20 centries, most olympics were held in advanced economics. but in 21 centries, emerging markets involved. and they also cost higher because they lack management exprience. Nevertheless, the economies increased.

The accounting deficit of Olympic is common. But it create more jobs. The contruction work span several years.

International events, such as Olympics do have large impact for local economy. Examples listed to show that international meetings or games boosted the local economies.

The problem is how to leverage the legacy of the games. Many sports constructions are left idle after the games. Sochi will be hoping to become a leading sea city in Russia after the Olympics.

Speaker:
Did London Get An Economic Boost From The 2012 Olympics? The Government Claims Olympic Benefits, but many economists don't agree, they think Olympics are almost always unprofitable. There are also some economists think that it's just too soon to know whether the London Games were worth the investment.

Time3: 2'35"
Why are cities so keen to host the Olympics?
On the face of it, throwing the world’s biggest party—and paying for it—is not especially appealing. The main reason cities want to host the Olympics is that, perhaps against the odds, they are wildly popular with the voters who foot the bill.

Time4: 2'33"
Time5: 3'04"
In a typical Chinese show of “face”, China certainly pulled out all the stops to wow the world. But hosting the Olympics makes no economic sense.
One facet of Beijing that warranted immediate attention was air quality, a nagging problem that still plagues the capital today.
Despite China’s promises to improve its worldwide image regarding certain controversial topics, nothing much has changed in the years following the Olympics.
From an organizational standpoint, China executed a flawless Olympics to silence detractors, to whom face seemingly means everything, perhaps that is enough.

Time6: 2'50"
Data released this month by the Office for National Statistics suggest that there has been a big increase in foreign tourists visiting Britain since London hosted the Olympics last year. Although record amounts are being spent in Britain by foreign tourists, Britons have upped their spending on foreign holidays by a similar amount.

Japan will host the 2020 olympic game. countries are keen to host this game why?
the cost was not super expensive, but it has changed recent years. However, tourism doesn't offset the expense.
2:32
the main reason is that most crowd support to hold the OG, so the government that plan to host it can get more vote. also, there are some other political or economic reasons. It is also a high-risk game. People may protest for the government waste and the politicans may not around when the game begins.

2:30
China spend lots of money on the olympic games to show face. tourism would be a return of this investment but the visa policy prohibited it. the game can help to increase the GDP but it will return to the normal point after the game. the bird nest and the water club become two theory parks after the game.
3:07
the Chinese government utilized various tactics to solve the air pollution. the spirt of the olympic games has changed. the political meaning is more important. although there is no economic benefit, the chinese governmnet achieved a glorious avenue to push oneself to the limits.
3:02
since 2010, the british economy has developed well. thanks for the olympic games,  Britain’s tourism industry appears to be contributing to the economic bounce.  Hotels and attractions are benefiting from the tourist trade. The government has been quick to attribute the tourism boom to the Olympics. The net impact of tourism on output depends not only on how much cash foreign visitors spend, but also on what Britons spend abroad, but because of the weather, more british go abroad.

------Speaker
Arguments regarding whether London got an economic boost from the 2012 Olympics.

------Speed
[Time 2] 2'18''
Background to introduce the eager of each country to hold the Olympics and the high cost of holding such event.
[Time 3] 2'37''
The reason for such eager is that,  perhaps against the odds, they are wildly popular with the voters who foot the bill, Olympics is most supported by the public, and different countries conduct Olympic bids for different intends. However, holding Olympics is a risky game.
[Warm Up]0'58''
Raising a question on whether China has gained from holding the Olympics in 2008.
[Time 4]2'25''
China spent 2.2bn USD on the Games and an unprecedented 40bn USD on infrastructure from 2001. However, China did gain little return from this capital investment in the following years.
[Time 5]3'20''
Although the Games improves the air quality, it returns to previous levels after controls were relaxed.
Olympics now have unfortunately become political carrots, and nothing much has changed in China in the years following the Olympics.
Hosting the Olympics makes no economic sense, while to the China's authorities,  the Game proved their vanities enough.
[Time 6]2' 39''
Britons have experienced a good economic condition, and such condition seems to be attributable to Britain’s booming tourism industry, and the government has even been quick to attribute the tourism boom to the Olympics; however, tourism will have less to offer the economic recovery unless more Britons can be persuaded to holiday at home rather than overseas.

-----Obstacles 6'26''
Despite of higher costs of staging Olympic Games, the benefits may also be higher.
The estimated accounting costs will not have a significant effect on government finances or Russia’s debt.
Olympics also create jobs, while demand for labour may have just pushed up labour costs.
The major part of construction spending and employment creation would have made a contribution to economic growth in the preceding years.
The Olympic Games and other major events do have a large impact on the regional economies.
Surveys show that infrastructure no longer features among top obstacles to doing business in the region.
It concludes that Sochi might be in a position to further leverage its position as Russia’s leading sea resort – and perhaps have a shot at becoming a regional business hub in the South of Russia.

T2 1:48
Many cities are eager to host the Olympics.
However, they have to face some problems:
1 high cost which could hardly make ends meet.
2 things to strengthen a city may become weekness of a city.

T3 2:26
Main reasons that cities want to host the Olympic:
the city which win the bid is wildly popular among voters.
Other reasons:
1 show off spending and organizational power. e.China
2 revive a poor part of the capital. e. London
3 boost a floundering economy. e. Japan

To host the game is of high risk, because:
1 politicians can be left looking ridiculous
2 someone else except those who shepherd the bid will take the credit or blame about the game because of the seven-year gap between bidding and staging the  game.

T4 2:23
China spend a lot to host the Olympic in 2008, but the return of the investment is not so promising:
1 tourist arrivals decreased because of tightened visa requirements after the Olympics.
2 the surge of GDP will back to normal after the Olympics.
3 undertake the loss of investing infrastructure.

T5 3:23
The Olympics helps bring the issue of air quality to the table and measures have been taken to improve the air quality in Beijing.
Since the Olympics turned to be political carrots, it becomes more controversial:
1 pro: the game will bring greater openness and less ignorance and fear
2 con: the game actually presents a repressive regime which met with skepticism and hostility.
Gains of the Beijing Olympics:
1 a glorious avenue to push China to its limits.
2 improvements made in many fields that silence skepticism and detraction.
3 international face

T6 2:41
After the Olympics, Britain experienced improvements in several economic fields.
Hotels, attractions, and governments quickly attribute the economy boom to the influence of Olympic Games.
However, the economic recovery should be based on the balance of spending both in Britain and in foreign coutries.

Obstacle
7:46
countries face high cost to stage the Olympic Games: 1 low level of infrastructure 2 the lack of tech and management expertise
return: confidence of economic boom on infrastructure.
Sochi may face the highest accounting loss because of the lower price of tickets and the higher cost to hold the game, but the cost will take up only a small portion of GDP.
create jobs:
! 1 temporary 2 crowd out other jobs 3 increase labour costs
construction spending & employment creation will continue to have impact on economic growth.
Sports games can help to boost regional economies.
infrastructure is not a kind of obstacle but will influence the growth of business.
Making good use of the legacy of Olympics might make Sochi a new regional business hub,

Time 2: The article introduces that many countries and cities are competing the Olympics games altough many of them have been rejected for many times.
However, hosting the Olympics game need to cost a large amount of money. (2:02)

Time 3: The article continues to introduces the main reason why so many countries like to host the Olympics game---the game is wildly popular with the voters who foot the bill.
However, the artilce also explains some expectation. Rio is one of the best examples which show that its citizen is against the Olympics game because of high expense.(2:21)

Time 4: Paragraphes introduces the cost of Beijing Olympics, and then discusses about whether  Olympics can bring some economic return. In the case of Beijing, it is obvious that the investment on
the Olympics infrastructue cannot return the relevant profits to this city. (2:39)

Time 5: The article discusses about the effect of Olympics game on Beijing. Three points are mentioned in the article. Cars are continued limiting to control air polution. Second, the artilce discusses about that to what extent the Olympics have a effect on politics.
No too much in the case of Beijing. Third, the author claims that for China's government face means everything and it is the only reason which makes Olympics worth (3:28)

Time 6: the data shows that the number of tourists and the amount of spending increase dramatically in UK after the  London Olympics games. It seems the Olympics game help UK recover its economics. However, the author disgrees with this viewpoint and claims that the
spending of British tourists in overseas is even higher than that of other travellers in the UK. Therefore, the tourism deflict happens. (3:09)

Obstacle: the article introduces the holding of Olympics game have no big effect on countries' economics,  and then the article introduces reasons why the game cannot raise the economic of the country. However, the Olympics game can help the holding city improve its local economics such as
transportation, infrastrature, and air polution. The author makes some examples to support this idea. At last, the author introuducs the holding countries faces chanllenges to comply with these Olympics infrastructure.(5:19)

Time 2:1'21''
Many cities have tried to bid Olypic games several times. Olympic games become increasingly expensive and its expense are not guaranteed to be compensate by toursim
bash:盛会
spruce up:打扮整齐漂亮

Time 3: 1'25''
The cities bid for the games are not only interested at the game itself but also intended to boost their economy.  However, it is a high risk game.

warm up: 0'34''

Time 4: 1'45''
Beijing expanded huge amount of money on Olympic games but the returns on investment is not as good as people expected. The arrivals for tourism dropped down after 2008, and many purpose-build stadiums have a tendency to morph into white animals
outlay:花费

Time 5: 2'02''
Beijing took many actions to improve its city image, but the results of these actions faded away after the events.  And the event also faced some skepticism and even hostility, and its glory are tarnished by the oversea protests. Though the event in Beijing was a success, but it seems to be a distant memory in every day life.
choregraph:编舞
detractor:贬低者,诽谤者

Time 6: 1'26''
Though Britain sees a surge in tourism, the tourism deficit does not been eliminate since many Britons spend their holiday overseas,

Obstacle: 3'48''
The emerging market meets higher costs of staging such events because of the poor sports infrastructure and the lack of corresponding technologies and management expertise.  Sochi will face the same situation, especially worse, since its ticket prices are lower than at the comparable recent events while its costs is the highest.
Though the event can create a lot jobs but large part of them are temporary. Since the unemployment rate is low in Russia, the large  job needs contribute to the rising cost of the event.
The local economy may benefit more from the great events than the national economy.

Russia spent more than it estimated to hold winter olypic games.
Econiomists say that almost nwer happens on a large enough scle to outweigh the cost of olympics.
London insists they were different.
A report about london olympic games said the country more than recouped the cost.
It consluded that britainhad earned at least 1 billion dollars more than it spent on the games and there would be tens of billion of dollars in the future.
The manager from the firm who commissioned the report came out in the talk.
This manager insisted the modeling was done without the influence from goverment
He said the study came with the endorsement fo the outside peer revivers.
A professor who also one of the peer reviewers said the report provided a very bullish view, refused to negative comments.
This professor comments the the report does not reflect what the data is saying.
And the company did not let the professor review the model.
one of the three other peer reviewers did not assess the final report, another one did not looked whole part, the third is not an expet in econmoic analysis
So the only expert is this profess, he describes the report as a political document.
London econmnist says countries are never satifified with throwing a great part such as olympic games.
There is tendency government add up all the positive nubers and discount or ignore all the negative numbers.
And it is too soon to know whether the london games were worth the investment.
Speed
1--02:01
Tokyo won to host the 2020 olympic games by beating mariano and istanbul.
These three cities are all not the first time to bid for hosting.
Why are cities so keen to host the olympics?
The cost used to be fairly modest, but now are reckoned.
Tourism may help to offset the expense, but not guaranteed.
2--02:05
The main reson to host hte olympics is they are pooular with the voters.
And olympic bids often have other agendas.
It is a high risk game.
Eve if it goes well, the year gap between bidding and staging means the politicain who shepherd the bid through are seldom around when the fun begins.
warm up--00:42
Does beijing olympics gams made the difference to China?
3--03:00
China pulled out all the stops to wow the world.
But the returns on the investment is under the expectation.
4--02:37
All th restriction makes sure the quality of air, but only care restirctions continued after game.
Game has become political carrots Proponents believes game would herald a new epoch while meet with skepticism and even hostility.
For China nothing much has changed after game.
It seems all worth autorities faces.
5--02:07
Even the tourism raised after london game, the rise of spending britiain outside contury flates the tourism deficit as it was.
Obstacle--05:08
Hosting olympic games and other major sports events has been a proerigative of advanced economies.
But the olymics of the 21st century a in emerging maerkt, which faces higher costs becasue lower infrastures and lack of echnologies and management experties.
The benfits may also be higher, such as improved investor, consumer condifence to higher economic retures.
Olympic almost never make money in pure accounting terms. Sochi will probably be the one of the highest accouting loss.
The costs represent a relative modest contribution to annual GDP.
Olympicsalso create jobs, but pushed up labour cost may have contributed to rising the costs of the event.
The influene of construction spending and employment span a number of years.
Games have a large impact on the regional econmies.
So sochi might be in futher its leading sea resort but less possible be the regional business hub in the south of russia.
