1.      First, let’s remember that admissions committees look atapplications from a holistic perspective – there are many parts of anapplication, and they are all important. Ultimately, schools want toensure that candidates are going to be successful in their programs, add valueto the programs while they are there, and advance their careers. At someschools, some of the components of an application have a threshold attached toit…for instance a minimum GMAT score or GPA, or the number of years ofpost-undergraduate work experience an applicant must have. With some schools,these are non-negotiable…if you don’t meet the criteria, you won’t be accepted.At other schools, thesecomponents are given weighted values and are part of a rubric gradingschematic, so that falling short in one admissions criteria doesn’t necessarilymean you are automatically disqualified from consideration. It’s up toyou to do your research to find out if schools have absolute thresholds or ifthere is some flexibility.

2.      The GMAT exam. For your topschools, your standardized test scores are going to be one of, if not the mostimportant, components of your application. There aremany ways to study for the GMAT including classes given both in person andonline; guide books; smart phone applications; and tutors. It will most likelybe some combination of the above that will lead to success for you.

3.      Your GPA and transcript. Just aswith the GMAT, many schools are going to have minimums that they have to orwant to adhere to. Obviously,the better your GPA in your undergraduate or previous master’s, the strongeryour application will be. However just because you have a lower than desiredGPA, doesn’t mean that you can’t stand out as a desired candidate.Admissions officers will try to forgive the errs of what a candidate might havedone as an 18 year old, but there usually needs to be something to make up forit from the candidate.
