4: When composing your personalstatement, be honest and clear in communicating your goals.

You will spend a lot of time at the school and with the administration;we like to know about your background and where you hope to be. These items areimportant, and they will likely be addressed later in an interview setting. This is also a great opportunityto tell the school how you are different and what sets you apart from the other applicants in the pool.

Again, use spell check, and re-read your work before submission. Whilethis is important for all aspects of your application, it is especiallyimportant in your personal statement. You might also have several acquaintancesreview the essay and provide feedback. Take advantage of all of the resourcesavailable to you when preparing your materials. Another trick several applicants have used is to puttheir personal statement aside for several days before submission. This givesyou time to clear your head and make additional changes while your brain isfresh before submitting it.

5:Request your transcripts early and correctly.

Make sure to submit OFFICIAL transcripts. Nine times out of ten, thismeans that they must come from your previously attended institution directly tothe school to which you are applying. Regularly, we have applicants handdeliver transcripts to our office, only for us to tell them that they aremarked “Unofficial” or “Issued to Student”. This is very frustrating for some,but this specific requirement is clearly outlined in our applicationinformation on the website. Save yourself some time and money, and reviewtranscript requirements before requesting copies.

6: Be sure to choose references who canspeak to your aptitude and to your future success in the graduateprogram.

Provide your references with an updated copy of your résumé when askingthem to speak on your behalf. While they may be an excellent reference and know you well, it is goodto provide them with a professional demonstration of your accomplishments sothat they can keep them fresh on their minds when recommending you.

Because constructing letters of recommendation take time and it isimportant to meet all deadlines, make sure to give specific deadlines to yourreferences and follow up regarding submission of the letters on your behalf.Again, don’t hound them, as they are likely taking time out of their busyschedules to help you out, but follow up to make sure things are moving alongsmoothly.

7: Perhaps most importantly, STUDY for your exam!

Step number one to studying effectively is to know which exam isrequired!

Reverse engineer your exam date from the application deadline, leaving yourself enough time tostudy and pass the exam and still complete your application before thedeadline.

Analyze your study habits to determine if you need to hire a tutor, takea prep course, or if you will be able to prepare yourself on your own time witha prep book and practice problems. You are the only one that can determinethis.

As with any exam, make sure you set an adequate study schedule foryourself and stick to it.
