Very important mental technique--unpacking long sentences!
technique prescription:
Notice that we have to read from the head of the sentence to the end of it, so it is
useful to think from the first word to the last one. Not complicate grammar analysis,
just try to grasp a reason, a concrete noun, then use a simple sentence to discribe
one by one. Use" there be" & "these", "it" to link each sentences, finally we get a big
picture of the beginning.
example:(This is a passage's initial two sentences~)
In many so-called "pro-drop" or "pronoun-drop" languages, verbs
inflect for number and person. In other words, by adding a prefix or suf
fix or by changing in some other way, the verb itself indicates whether the
subject is singular or plural, as well as whether the subject is first person (/
or we), second person (you), or third person (he, she, it, or they).
9. The first two sentences could be unpacked in the following way:
There are languages called “pronoun-drop” languages.
In many of these languages, verbs “inflect” for number and person.
That is, you change the verb itself somehow.
This change shows who is doing the action (I, you, or someone else).
The verb tells us whether that subject is singular or plural.
The verb also tells us whether that subject is first, second, or third person
take aways:
1. unpacking is following the sequence of the sentences.
2. the key is to grasp a concrete noun and the link between sentences.
3. unpacking is used with concretizing.
4. when the meanings are parallel, just list the simple sentences side by side. |
