DescriptionApplications from prospective Ph.D. students are invited for one position in the area of Computational Applied Mathematics in the Graduate Program in Mathematics at the University of Vermont (http://www.uvm.edu/~cems/mathstat/). The selected Ph.D. candidate will be supported for his/her first year of studies by a Teaching Fellowship. Subject to satisfactory progress, the candidate will be eligible for continued funding for up to four more years, two of which may be through a Research Assistantship provided by the National Science Foundation. Our Department has a strong record of supporting the students through to their completion of Ph.D. studies. The specific area of this funded program is at an interface between Nonlinear Dynamics / Applied Mathematics, on one hand, and Numerical Analysis, on the other. It concerns numerical stability of computational methods that are used to simulate nonlinear waves and, more generally, spatially distributed nonlinear systems. In most cases, such stability cannot be inferred by the classical tools of Numerical Analysis, and an alternative technique needs to be used. Understanding numerical instabilities can help one to modify the computational method and hence make it more time-efficient. Applicants for this Research Assistantship should have a Master’s or an undergraduate degree in a field related to Applied Mathematics. Familiarity with computational methods would be helpful but is not required; however, a genuine desire to learn them is required. In addition, the applicants must meet the general requirements for funded admission as outlined under the regulations of the University of Vermont Graduate College:http://www.uvm.edu/~gradcoll/?Page=prospective/admissions.php&SM=prospective/_prospectmenu.html . The position is intended to begin in Fall 2013; alternative arrangements will be considered on an individual basis. To applyIn order to be considered for the graduate program at the University of Vermont all applicants are required to complete the: 1. GRE General Examination, and 2. TOEFL (for non-native English speakers) A formal application for graduate study at the University of Vermont can be completed online at: https://www.applyweb.com/apply/uvmg/menu.html In addition to a formal application to the Graduate School, it is recommended that the applicants send the following to Dr. Taras Lakoba (tlakoba@uvm.edu), who will supervise these studies: (i) a brief (less than one page) statement of research experience and interests, (ii) a recent CV, and (iii) the names and e-mail addresses of at least three faculty who could provide their recommendation letters. All documents must be either .pdf or .doc files and must be sent in a single e-mail message. This additional submission will ensure that the application will receive the full attention of the prospective Ph.D. advisor and the Graduate Admissions Committee at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Candidates who have questions or would like guidance before making a formal application, may send their inquiries at no cost directly to Dr. T. Lakoba. |
