Independent Writing: Some people think that a university professor should focus time on doing research; while others think that the main role of a professor is to educate students in university.

Professors play an important role in university and they are the people who manage the teaching and research. While I accept that teaching is the responsibility of the professor, I believe that college professors should spend more time in conducting academic study.

Firstly, as practice is the criterion of testing truth, academic success requires hands-on experiments. For example, if a medical professor does not conduct a blind experiment, it is difficult for the scholar to evaluate the effectiveness of a medical drug which is often forestalled the chance of a placebo effect. Without enough experiment, it would be hard for scholars to test the theories and explore science.

From a pragmatic perspective, conducting on research can be a method to make contributions to the human beings and society. The cutting edge knowledge comes from research. For example, the penicillin, the most widely used antibiotic to date, was discovered by a professor from Imperial College, which is a result of an experiment in a college laboratory. Experiments can help professors to develop science and technology, which can yields the results that benefit the world.

Some people concern that professors should spend more time in cultivating successors. However, I would argue that if professors never do research, can they impart empirical knowledge to students? Can the teaching standard be increased? There are many research universities, such as Harvard and Cambridge, where have high-quality teaching. The main reason is that those schools have professors who have lots of academic achievements that comes from research.

In conclusion, professors should spend more time in conducting research because research is a measure of testing principles, a way of contributing to society and a method of improving teaching quality.

Independent Writing: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People can learn more from watching television than by reading books.

Many people enjoy watching television which plays a pivotal role in people’s daily life. While I accept that many people tend to watch TV while lying down on the couch, I believe that people can learn more from the traditional materials such as books.

On the one hand, the television programmer has advantages of entertaining and informative. Firstly, television can be entertaining and enjoyable and brings the best teacher into our home. For example, combined with visual and audio effects, English learning programmers create a stimulating learning environment to attract audiences’ attention. In addition, TV programmers can be informative and educational. People have a habit of collecting information from TV because the news coverage enables audiences to aware of the up-to-date events around the world. From an educational perspective, the documentaries in television make the learning process more interesting and engaging. For example, we can study astronomy, cosmology and the origin of the universe just by turning on the Discovery channel.

However, reading books is a better method of learning. To begin with, we have seen that books can go right in our pocket and be read anywhere, which bring a huge convenience to learner. We can also easily spread fiction books with and borrow the Economist magazines from others thanks to its small in size. Furthermore, as books are durable, information in them can be accessed over and over again, with no requirement of batteries and electricity. We have seen that we have grasped of plenty of knowledge thanks to those ancient books passed down from our ancestors. Lastly, books are user-friendly and allow readers to set their own pace and flip back and forth between pages on purpose of referencing to useful contents. Life abounds with examples in which we referent a textbook easily with tabs, marks, notes, underlines or highlights.

In conclusion, it seems that, books would be preferable in terms of learning because compared TV, the book is more portable, durable and easy-to-use.

Professorsplay an important role in university and they are the people who manage theteaching and research. While(在这里这个用法值得讨论) Iaccept(thefact 帮你加点字数~) that teaching is theresponsibility of the professor, I believe that college professors should spendmore time in conducting academic study.(背点起始段的例句吧,这样写的太平淡了)

Firstly,as practice is the criterion of testing truth(实践是检验真理的唯一标准?。。。), academic success requires hands-onexperiments. For example(这个for example 可以改的复杂些例如 To make my point more compelling,I would like to take xx as an example, if a medical professordoes not conduct a blind experiment, it is difficult for the scholar toevaluate the effectiveness of a medical drug which is often forestalled thechance of a placebo effect. Without enough experiment, it would be hard forscholars to test the theories and explore science.(例子不够具体,不像是example,反而像是在单纯的说理。你想说科研成功需要试验,这和focus on research or teaching有什么关系。)

Froma pragmatic perspective, conducting on research can be a method to makecontributions to the human beings and society. The cutting edge knowledge comesfrom research. For example, the penicillin, the most widely used antibiotic todate, was discovered by a professor from Imperial College, which is a result ofan experiment in a college laboratory. 既然都说了这个例子,并且你上面说有益于人类和社会,怎么有利反而没说,这里就可以加上一个假的调查,说减少了发病率什么的··例子展开不够)Experiments can helpprofessors to develop science and technology, which can yields(yield)the results that benefit the world.(这段说research对人类有利,这个观点是正确。但是你应该更进一步说,所以professor应该do research)

Somepeople concern that professors should spend more time in cultivatingsuccessors. However, I would argue that if professors never do research, canthey impart empirical knowledge to students? Can the teaching standard beincreased? There are many research universities, such as Harvard and Cambridge, where have high-quality teaching. The main reason is that those schools haveprofessors who have lots of academic achievements that comes(come) fromresearch.and theprofessor has a rich knowledge about their subject. So they can transfer thecutting-edge technology and science to student. As a result of those, the levelof teaching can be improved amazedly.

Inconclusion, professors should spend more time in conducting research becauseresearch is a measure of testing principles, a way of contributing to societyand a method of improving teaching quality.(+ Therefore, I stick to my pointthat XXXXXX)

Independent Writing: Agree or disagree? Patient is usually not a good thing; we should take actions at once.

Hastiness and anxiety are the psychic disease of this era. While I accept that taking actions at once may be conductive to seize opportunities, I disagree that patience is not a great character of human being.

Taking every action at once is simply unrealistic and may cause many problems. Firstly, taking all actions at once is often linked to impetuous decisions. For example, if we impulsively buy a house without taking the geographical nature and the surrounding facilities into account, we will probably regret what you did. In order to avoid mistakes, we need to make decisions under careful considerations. Moreover, as taking action in a short time usually brings about psychological burden, we may easily make mistakes while working. For example, if we intend to write a 10,000 words academic report in one night, we normally produce a report with many mistakes such as grammatical errors. In reality, it may be hard for us to produce a result at once.

On the other hand, patience is the state of endurance and perseverance which are the character traits that will help us to achieve success. One obvious example is that sportsmen need to be patient in intense exercises on purpose to break a world record. It is impossible if the sportsman does not work hard with patience. In addition, patience is conductive to effective and well-organized thought. For example, Obama administration requires time to address fiscal cliff issue step by step rather than using dramatically measures on the hope of the economy recovering from recession immediately. Lastly, being patient helps us to control our emotions when faced with difficulties, which means that people with patience would less likely be acting in a negative way.

In conclusion, it seems that being patient would be a great trait because it is a state of mind that is prerequisite of success and that enable us to think deeply and help us to control the negative feeling.

Independent Writing:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
The most important characteristic of a politician or a leader is the good communication skill.

A leader can be described as a person who has a social influence. While I accept that having a good communication skill is the most important factor for a leader, I believe that there are many characteristics that are more important than the communication skill.

On the one hand, as the communication is the art of discourse, having excellent communication ability may be a prerequisite of being a leader. The first reason is that leaders have responsibility of informing, persuading and motivating others. These abilities play an important role in leadership and that is why people with the skill could avoid language barriers and misunderstandings in discussions and meetings. Moreover, expressing idea clearly is important for every politician leader because this ability can help a leader to win supports for a proposal. For example, if the president Kennedy did not defend the enormous expense of the space program and delivered an excellent speech in Houston, the US would have not implemented the program in 1960s that land men on the moon and help the humankind to solve the mysteries of space.

However, I would argue that there are many people, who are good at communication and even rhetoric, but only some of them are leaders. One can be a leader if one is optimistic and intelligent. Firstly, the foundation of leading others lies in the optimism. On the way to the destination, leaders will often come across lots of obstacles, but they need an optimistic attitude to find ways to overcome difficulties. As a result, their optimism would also inspire others, which is where success lies. From a pragmatic perspective, intelligence is also important for leaders. Without intelligence, politician leaders could not find the keys to solve all the intricate problems. For instance, in order to speed up economic growth, it is not enough for the eloquent Obama to deliver good speeches. It also requires Obama’s intelligence to tackle the fiscal cliff issue and reduce unemployment.

In conclusion, it is hard for a person to become a leader without optimism and intelligence. It seems that optimism and intelligence are more important than the communication skill for a leader.

Independent Writing:在家工作好, 还是去公司工作好?(Some people prefer to work at home while others would rather work in a company, which one would you like?)

With the advanced technology that makes remote working possible, many people can perform tasks at home, communicating with others simply via email, online networks and video conferencing. While some people argue that they prefer working at an office complex, I believe that working at home would be a better choose, for it can benefit employees, employers and society.

For employees, working at home would save their considerable time. Without time-consuming travelling between office and home, white-collar workers will be able establish a balance between work and life. For example, single mothers, who is also an office lady, would be capable of taking care of their babies while working days. For business owners, the high operating costs can be reduced by a laissez-fair management. Thereby, employers can invest money in extending businesses, without having to pay skyrocketing rents in the Central Business Districts. Most importantly, with less commuters travelling and fewer demand of electricity in the metropolis, many social problems can be curbed. Undeniably, urban traffic congestion can be alleviated and carbon emission can be reduced, which is essential for economic and social sustainability.

However, performing tasks in office block may have three merits. From psychological perspective, cooperating with colleagues can dispel loneliness and boredom. Having teammates accompany with, we will feel passionate and confident, with a high morale in a teamwork. Another benefit is that working together is a contributing factor in establishing organizational culture. If everyone are staying at home without a chance of face-to-face contact, each employee would be indifferent to colleagues and works. Lastly, working in office can enhance productivity. Compared with reliance on workers’ self-discipline, managers can supervise work process directly, receive feedback immediately and execute tasks efficiently.

From what has been discussed, although people may profit from working in offices, most of the people including employees, employers and citizens have benefited more from the policy of working at home.

Independent Writing:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
The best way to improve the quality of education is to increase teachers ‘salaries’.

As education is the core of modern society, people are deeply concern about the quality of education. While I accept that money-incentives can improve teacher’s efficiency, I believe that there are many ways better than simply raising tutors’ salaries.

On the one hand, increasing wages can attract better teachers and arouse more teachers’ enthusiasm. From a pragmatic perspective, financial incentives can attract talented teachers.  For example, in remote villages, salaries for teachers are low, which deters good candidates. That is why a talented graduate with a degree in education tend to find a job in big cities where usually promise a high salary. In addition, increasing wages for teachers enable them to focus on preparing lessons and academic researches. The teacher with a well-paid will never have to engage in other part-time job because of the low wage that cannot afford the housing mortgage. Thereby, the quality of teaching can be improved immediately.

However, I would argue that raising the wages is not the best choice. As the schools are always on the tight budget, it is more urgent for them to invest money in training teachers and to introduce modernized teaching equipment. To begin with, training teachers can enable students to receive better education more quickly and economically, compared to offer a huge pay to non-experienced graduates. The teaching quality can be enhanced greatly, if every teacher has got enough tainting. Moreover, investing in facilities, such as purchasing the chemical equipment and building the physics laboratory, would be better measures to improve quality of education, which is what a school really requires.

In conclusion, although providing teachers’ with the huge wage is a good method to enhance the quality of education, training tutors and improving the school facilities would be better measures.
