12. Governments should offer a free university educationto any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford thetuition.
Write a response in which you discuss yourviews on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Indeveloping and supporting your position, you should consider the possibleconsequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequencesshape your position.
With the surging development of society andeducation, more and more students have the opportunity to be admitted byuniversities and colleges. However, many indignant but igneous students are toopoor to sustain themselves for the highly tuition fees and thus are forced todrop out of school. Based on this, many people argue that it is the governments’responsibility to offer a free university education to any student who has beenadmitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition. While thiscontention could be plausible to some extent, it is inevitably too narrow inits scope, which means that we have to look at the panorama in order to gain abetter understanding of the gist of the issue.
To begin with, there is no denying thatproviding students who cannot afford tuitions will help students in many ways.On the one hand, those students could grasp the opportunity of being cultivatedand taught, providing equality in education. Since the tuition fees are notpaid, students will be forced to leave universities, even if they are talentedand have a strong desire to learn. In this case, higher education will onlyserve to the rich, making the rich people rich and those in poverty even poor, resultingthe society no longer in harmonious any more. On the other, students willengage themselves more in study and research with the tuition being paid sincethey no longer have to take variety part-time jobs which take up too much time.In this light, chances are that students will make more achievements which willbring great benefits to the society, making the sum of money spent on themvaluable. Thus, in this way the contention is valid.
However, given that providing students withfree university education has its beneficial effect, the negative consequencesit brings cannot be ignored. Generally speaking, it is hard and even impossiblefor the government to provide so many funds solely on aiding students witheducation in that more and more students are admitted by universities and moreand more money are charged by universities, leading to a considerable number ofpeople unable to pay for the high fee. Were large sum of money spent to assiststudents, funds in other fields such as medical care, transport and researchwill surely decrease accordingly, hampering development is these fields. Inthis case, the government no more a competent government since the responsibilityof the government is to improve general welfare of the society as a whole.
Moreover, from personal perspective, the abilityfor self-development will also be impaired. Since education will not only aimat providing students with knowledge as well as basic skills but also elicitthe potential of learning and abilities such as critical thinking andself-sustaining. In light of this, providing students with tuition protectsstudents from working and thinking for themselves which is deleterious fortheir growth, because only in tough situations could people foster strong mindto confront with difficulties and elicit the potential to deal with it. Accordingly, people are easily satisfied with the comfortable environment the governmentprovides-not to worry about tuition any more-and therefore lose the impetus to relyon themselves.
In retrospect, it’s important for thegovernment to provide help for students who cannot afford the tuition inuniversity. But to provide all the tuition for them is not only out of thereach of the government but also exert negative effect on them. Otherorganizations such as private patronage or scholarship from companies might bebetter to solve this problem. After all, only then could promote thedevelopment of education.
