The lecture and the reading passage give contradictoryopinions on the topic of commercial fossil hunting. The passage explains thatfossil hunting by private collector will bring about negative effects while thelecture provides several counterarguments to this view.
First of all, the reading passages notice that privatecollectors would not allow the public to see their collections and thus thepublic is gradually losing the interests on the fossils. On the contrary, the professorcontends that with more fossils excavated by private collectors, there are morefossils on the market. Consequently, public libraries and school are able tobuy those fossils and make them accessible for the public.
The professor also refutes the second point in the readingpassage that the scientists and experts are less likely to reach those valuablefossils since the science institutions could not compete with rich privatecollectors. The professor, however, asserts that scientists have ability togain access to the fossils since they are the only ones who can identify the authenticityof the fossils.  Therefore, the sciencecommunity could gain any important information that they want.
In the end, while the reading passages argues that theprivate collectors might miss out a lot of important information because theyonly focus on the biggest fossils, the professors explains that even thoughsome remains are lost, it is better to get more fossils than not finding any fossils.
All of this meansthat the benefits of fossil hunting by private collectors outweigh thedrawbacks of that.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?People now are less happy and less satisfied than people in the past.
The world is changing and developing at a faster and faster rate(改成much faster rate会不会更好?) all the time. With today’s hectic schedules, many people complain thatthey are less happy and less satisfied than their counterparts in the pastsince they endure more pressures that come from various directions. However, I frownon this opinion. I argue that nowadays people are much happier and moresatisfied about their lives than ones in the past because of the improvement ofquality of life, more opportunities they have, good relationship with familythey maintain.
To begin with, along with the rapidly economic development, the overall quality of life has improved dramatically. People could live ahappier life with a better facilities(a去掉) and service.  Moreover, technology has aided(好!) us in the fightagainst the two most serious threats to human beings: hungers(去s) and disease(加s). Withthe help of technology we have been able to save millions of lives bydeveloping vaccinations, cures and treatment for diseases that used to be consideredfatal.  Consequently, the material andspiritual life is enriched greatly and people could live and work in peace andcontentment
In addition, we have more opportunities to pursue our dreams. When our parents were growing up, the world was filled with turmoil. They hadto work had to feed their family no matter if they enjoy that job.  On the contrary, the current generation hasgrown up in a very safe and peaceful environment.  The society provides them more opportunitiesto to achieve success. They could receive advanced education with a wide array of scholarshipor financial aids that school and government offer; they could change theircareers when they come to the career bottleneck; they even could go aboard tofind a job as long as they want to do so.(排比超不错!) There are infinite chances available foreveryone.  Those opportunities give peoplegreat happiness and satisfaction.
Last but not least, there is no doubt that family is themost important part in our lives. A person's happiness correlates closely tothe family relation. Despite the society has changed, people still highly valuethe strong family ties. For example, during the holidays, thousands of peoplego back to their hometown and get union with their family. Thanks to moderncommunication and transportation tools, they make the family relation closer.By telephones, emails, and internet, we have ability to easily communicate withour family. By flights, trains and buses, we have ability to visit out familyat any time. The relationship with family is more intimate.
In a nutshell, compared to our past counterparts, we live ina stable, advanced and open world.  As aresult, we gain more happiness and satisfaction.

The lecture and the reading passage give contradictoryopinions on the topic of Salvage logging which a way to remove the dead treesafter the forests are destroyed by fires or storms. The passage explains thatsalvage logging is beneficial, while the lecture argues that in long run, thesalvage logging would lead to the damages on environment and economy.
Firstly, the reading passage notices that the decomposedtrees would block the forests and removing dead trees can create spaces for thenew trees.  On the contrary, theprofessor opposes it by pointing out that the process of wood decomposition, infact, could fertilize the soil and provides nutrients for the new growth.
The professor also refutes the second point in the readingpassage that the rotten trees would bring about many harmful insects whichdamage the forests. The professor, however, asserts that those insects do notdamage the forests in long term. Moreover, those decayed trees not only incurso-called harmful insects, but also incurs a variety of beneficial infect.
In the end, while the reading passage says that salvagelogging could produce economic benefits since it can provide job opportunitiesand the dead trees can be used as wood source, the professor contends thatthose job opportunities created by logging salvage are temporary and needoutside experts instead of local workers.
All of this means that salvage logging is not an effectiveway to deal with the destroyed forests by fire, and even it can results indamages environmentally and economically.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? High school students should take a course on basic economics.

The current upheavals in the financial markets have lefteveryone confused. Amid the waves of failing banks, roiling stock exchanges, massive government bailouts, and wildly fluctuating currency and energymarkets, we have become newly aware of the importance of mastering basic economicknowledge for students. In order to survive in the increasingly severe financialmarket, I contend that all high-school students should take basic economiccourses.
To begin with, to leave high school students ignorant of thebasic facts of economy was a negative measure in the modern world. According toa recent research, many teenagers have ready access to credit and bankingfacilities. Nearly a third of all high school seniors own credit cards, andstill more have their own ATM cards; however, they are not particularly capablewhen it comes to tracking their spending or understanding the financialinstruments they use. Most of them don’t know how to read a bank statement, balance a checkbook, or pay a bill. It is crucial to make high school studentseconomically and financially literate to meet the challenges that face everyonein daily life.
In addition, equipping our young people with economic knowledgecan prepare them for a future of financial security as responsible adults.Financial problems are a major contributor to the breakdown of relationshipsand marriages. And financial woes can be lifelong. Without the basic knowledgeon economics, like insurance, mortgages, pensions and investments, people wouldstruggle with monetary problems for the rest of their lives. Only masteringthose knowledge and skills would they become responsible and independentpersons who can keep their family’s finance health.
Conversely, it is argued that teaching economics should beleft until college years. However, what of those who do not progress tocollege? For another thing, even many professors concede that many colleges anduniversities are failing to integrate on financial and economic education intotheir core curricular. And college economics focuses mostly on theory, and notthe required practical elements of everyday personal finance. Consequently, many would miss out on the early learning of handling their money in anefficient manner.
For a newly graduated high-school student, the “real world”can be a scary place to be when he or she is faced with such issues as handlingcredit, planning a budget, or dealing with insurance. Schools should takeresponsibility of equipping our young people with the essentials of basiceconomics, let alone prosper in this globalized world. What better place toaccomplish this that high school?

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Inorder to solve the problems of the present and the future, people should reviewthe past.

People live the present. They plan for and worry about thefuture. History, however, is the study of the past. Some people might say thathistory is out of date and meaningless since we are living a new era which istotally different with the past.  I frownon this opinion. I firmly believe that past has its value; it could offer astorehouse of information and build our identity.  Inthe meantime, people should take current and future influential variables intoconsideration

To beginwith, it offers an extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysisof people and society. Everything that is happening today stems from the pastand will have direct effects on the future. Being aware of our history helps toavoid old mistakes and make right decisions. For example, to look back athistory, we realize that war is a frightful calamity and we should cherish thepeace of the current society; we also realize the technology can promote socialprocess and we should spare no effort to develop technology. With the past experienceand lessons, we could find the best way to develop our society.

What’s more, historyhelps us understand change and how the society we live in came to be.  ast causes the present, and so the future.Only through history can we grasp how things change; only through history canwe comprehend what factor cause change; and only through history can weunderstand what elements of a society should be persisted despite change. Anytime we try to know why something happened, we have to look for factors thattook shape earlier.

Of course, our society is developing at a high speed. When we look further back to searchfor useful information, we must also consider current society’s situation andfeatures. Although there is a large amount of past information available to us,we should learn how to analyze it critically. We should be able to learn fromhistory instead of copying history simply. Only in this way, can history contributesa lot to the today’s society.

In a nutshell, learning about the past is of importance for us. I strongly believe that it ishighly beneficial for modern people to possess good knowledge of the history. Eventhough we are completely devoured by our present current existence, we shouldlook back to the past as carefully as we can.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?People are now easier to become educated than in the past.

Have you ever realized that more and more people go back toschool in order to make them competitive in today’s fierce job market? Have youever realized that all kinds of vocational schools sprung up like mushroom? Haveyou ever realized that education books are always on the top 10 best-seller’slist? Nowadays, education issue has caused wide public concern. An increasingnumber of people receive advanced education. It is conceivable that contemporarypeople are easier to become educated than their counterparts in the past.

To begin with, when our parents were growing up, the world wasfilled with turmoil. They were born into a time of war, and generally, live througha very difficult era. For instance, when my father was in middle school, thecivil war broke out, and my father had to quit school. On the other hand, thecurrent generation has grown up in a very safe and peaceful environment. We donot need to worry about our future. We could spend more time and energy pursuingour education.

What’s more, along with the rapidly economic development, governments in growing numbers are beginning to believe that education is thecornerstone of a country’s future, and thus they pay more attention and financeon education. Nine-year compulsory education has basically been popularized inmany countries. Also, more and more governments expand the universityenrollment so that more people are able to receive advanced education. Thegovernments are sparing no efforts to develop education system to make more citizenswell educated.

Last but not least, nowadays, the majority of people believethat education is a lifetime study. Schools provide more opportunities foreveryone. For example, many universities offer online courses, continuingeducation courses and certificate courses, which could meet people’s various needs. An investigation shows that many older people express a strong desire tocontinue studying in university or college. One of my friends, Steve, startedto study at a law school at the age of fifty. There are also more interestclasses readily available for children to cultivate their hobbies, such as musicclasses, kungfu classes, and second language classes.  Consequently, everyone could learn what theywant.

In a nutshell, after people take into account all of the aspectsof modern society, I think that they will come to the conclusion that thecurrent generation are easier to be educated than ones in the past.  To survive in the hectic society, everyoneshould to improve their competition by continue learning, and the governmentsshould create more opportunities for their citizens.
