The author claims that although innovations such as video, computers, and the Internet seem to offer schools improved methods for instructing students, these technologies all too often distract from real learning. As far as I am concerned, I partially agree with the author. I concede that the advanced technologies such as the sophisticated computer and peerless Internet have much preponderance for instructing students to learn, however, at the same time, it is these technologies that distract the students from real learning.
Admittedly, innovations such as computers, video and the Internet do bring about vigor and renovation to the education and to a great extent increase the effectiveness and efficiency. It is human nature that we are lazy. Owing to this, some advanced technologies can surely make the teaching more vivid and visual and thus catch the attention of the students, while the students find the traditional teaching methods boring and uninterested. Moreover, the technologies, such as Internet, can provide more information in detail and more accurately, while in the past, we had to carry stockpiles of documents to look for some information, which was inconvenient and uncomfortable. Finally, as the emergency of the computer and the Internet, we can fulfill our ever dream that students can study knowledge even they are far away from the schools, through the so-called “long-distant” education, which can significantly economize the time and resource.
However, sometimes such technologies inevitably distract from real learning. To begin with, the video games are created after the emergency of the computers. With the rapid development of the computer and the Internet, it is quite possible for one to play computer games through the Internet, such as the WOW and so forth. Undeniably, a large amount of students will be addicted to these computer games and thus they would no longer be inclined to study. According to a recent survey, nearly ten percent of the total students fail to pass the final exams in the college, for the reason that they have spent excessive time play Internet computer games, and little time working on their study field. What’s more, the overload information from the Internet may misinform the students, since they cannot make a brief comment on the sheer bulk of the information. Moreover, improper use of these tools might diminish the effectiveness and efficiency of the education. First of all, the instruction is not a merely process of question and answer while the teacher does play a significant role in it that the teacher’s behavior would to a considerable extent influence the students, which could never be replaced by these advanced tools. On the other hand, some courses simply could not be instructed without face-to-face communication, such as singing, dancing and painting. Overall, what deserves attention is our attitude towards how to take advantage of these technologies properly. While the adequate use of these technologies can be beneficial, excessive use may lead to serious situation mentioned above. Thus, we should find a balance; otherwise, we would be mired in the plight of addiction of these technologies.
