The following appeared in a memo from the president of Bower Builders, a company that constructs new homes.
"A nationwide survey reveals that the two most-desired home features are a large family room and a large, well-appointed kitchen. A number of homes in our area built by our competitor Domus Construction have such features and have sold much faster and at significantly higher prices than the national average. To boost sales and profits, we should increase the size of the family rooms and kitchens in all the homes we build and should make state-of-the-art kitchens a standard feature. Moreover, our larger family rooms and kitchens can come at the expense of the dining room, since many of our recent buyers say they do not need a separate dining room for family meals." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

The memo argues that BowerBuilders should construct new homes with large family room and a large,well-appointed kitchen, so that the company will boost sales and profits. Tomake the argument convincing, the president presented many seemingly persuasiveevidences for it, but some of the basic assumptions of those evidences mayprove unwarranted. The president cites the result of a nationwidesurvey indicating that two features that many people want are a sufficient roomfor family and a well-equipped kitchen. Persuading the company to build houseswith a large room and kitchen is based on the assumption that the requirementproposed by the customers buying Bower Builders is the same as customers allaround the country. However, the president doesn't provide such fact, whichmeans that there is a chance that the result of the survey just represents thedemand of the nation's average level, not the same as customers who buy a BowerBuilders. In other words, maybe customers in others cities love a large familyroom and a large, well-appointed kitchen. To make the argument convincing, thepresident should provide some things to prove his customers need suchimprovement. If the nationwide survey result is accustomed toBower Builders, the argument is also unconvincing for its false analogy. Thepresident says that Domus Construction sells faster as a consequence of suchfeatures. As a result of his providing no evidence to show that customers'buying Domus' house stems from its large room and kitchen. Domus' sellingfaster can be explained by their better after-sale services or a beautifulenvironment and it is just a coincidence that they have the two features. Butthe president doesn't take into account these possibilities. To make theargument strong, the president must eliminate those probabilities. Finally, the president advocates the company tobuild larger room and kitchen at the expense of the dining room. Thissuggestion can be weaken by a situation that the majority of customers love thedining room rather than a state-of-the-art kitchen. Nevertheless, thissituation is always happening, a dining room is somewhere a family havingdiners, which is a place representing a family's union. The author shouldconsider it, and provide evidence much more than some recent buyers'complaints, because the complaints from recent buyers may not representative enough. To sum up, the president's suggestion of building alarge room and a well-equipped kitchen in this memo isn't persuasive enough. Many assumptions on which the argument based may prove unwarranted. Tostrengthen the argument, many other things have to be showed to us; otherwisethe Bower Builders shouldn't take the president's advice. 字数是不是太少了啊。。。。?argu的字数一般好像是需要450以上是吗? |
