210. Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

(A) extending

(B) extends

(C) extended

(D) it extendedA

(E) is extending

Choice A, the best answer, preserves grammatical parallelism while allowing for logical expression of temporal relationships; (平行)A employs the parallel participial phrases spawned... and extending... to modify filigree. Other choices present different grammatical constructions that are not participial modifiers and thus not parallel to spawned: extends in B is a present-tense verb; it extended in D begins a new clause; and is extending in E ungrammatically introduces a new predicate. In C, extended is nonparallel if it is assumed to be a past tense verb form; if it is assumed to be a past participle, it illogically states, as does D, that the filigree extended only in the past.

答案没有问题,我想问的是为什么spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest 不直接修饰tentacles,一般不是就近修饰吗?为何本题跳跃修饰FILIGREE?而且,如果从逻辑意思来说,也说得过去呀,FUNGUS IS FILIGREE (OF MUSHROON AND ROOTLIKE TENTACLES),TENTACLES SPAWNED AND EXTEDNING

是不是ed分词修饰的必须是核心词?

我来问另外的一个问题:假如选B, 可不可以看成

that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extentds for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

that is an interwoven 跟 extentds 并列?

这样想不对的原因是不是因为并列成分一定要对称?

同意攜隱的看法

A of B Ved(which is Ved) by....and Ving(which Ved)......習慣上是修飾 A,也就是修飾核心詞filigree

至於樓上講的對稱方式,一般來說是很少見的,動詞對動詞平衡並列,形容詞對形容詞並列,be動詞與動詞並列

非但少見,句意也交待不過去

為什麼句意會交代不過去呢 a giant fungus extends for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest 這樣意思真的不通嗎

以下是引用best555tw在2005-2-25 14:45:00的发言:

仔细想想那filigree是一万前某一天被spawned,然后斗换星移,一直长了一万年不烦,到今天还在长(注意是living organism,而且 that is)。这么一个持续并进行着的过程,用一般现在时(extends)或过去时(extended)表达是不通的,至少也应该说:and (a giant fungus) has been extending for more than 30 arces吧。extending正好可表示持续状态。且不说,A is B and does C 是如何不平行和awkward的,如:

I am a student and read books every day. (awkward)

本題句意我懂了, 答案選項我也懂了, 可是我就是搞不懂 "a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles" 到底怎麼翻譯, 怎麼也想不通, 這個菌類怎麼會是菌絲呢? 誰來幫幫忙?!

是否翻译成: 一个由菌丝和根须缠绕合成的巨大真菌

anyname的解释比较有道理,B/E如果与that is 平行的话因为距离太远,最好改为明确修饰关系的从句比如,and the fungus is extending for ....,各位一下如何?

open to discuss....

为什么和og164不一样呢?(至少表面上看来是这样)

164. The commission proposed that funding for the park's development, which could be open to the public early next year. is obtained through a local bond issue.

(A) that funding for the park's development, which could be open to the public early next year, is

(B) that funding for development of the park,
which could be open to the public early next year, be

(C) funding for the development of the park,
perhaps open to the public early next year, to be

(D) funds for the park's development, perhaps open
to the public early next year, be

(E) development funding for the park, which could
be open to the public early next year, is to be

正确答案是b,根据解释,which could be open to the public early next year是修饰the park的,但是(表面上看来),根据og210的答案,164中的which could be open to the public early next year应该是修饰funding for development 的中的funding的。到底这是怎么一回事???/我已经是第三次问这个问题了,请NN们看一下吧。要考试了……
