Argument 7
The following is a recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books.
"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
In this argument, the author recommends Monarch Books open a café in its store so that the store can attract more customers. To support this recommendation the author set Regal Books for example, the store recently opened its own café and attracted more customers. And the author is silly to consider that Monarch has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. What’s more, the author states space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children’s book section. Because it will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten.
First of all, the author presents a false analogy. Regal Books opened its own café and attracted more customers do not mean Monarch Books will attract more customers if it opens a café in its own store. Because of the difference of location and style of the two stores, Regal Books and Monarch Books are incomparable. Even if these factors can be ignore, sales price variance can also result in the different popularity of stores. The author neglects the reason why Regal Books opened its own café. It is much possible that the sales revenue is too low to maintain the book store, therefore a café opening is a measure to increase the sales revenue. Moreover, lacking evidence that the café propel Regal’s revenue, the author cannot convince me.
Secondly, the author assumes that Monarch has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books and its twenty years old store, however, without specific evidence to prove the wide customer equals to buyers, the assumption can be rejected out of hand. Even if the new café can attract more customers, the author fails to consider and rule out the possibility that the smelling of beverage and food and noise will annoy a group of customers, or disperse previous customers. This scenario is quite possible, especially considering that an atmosphere of quiet is necessary to reading.
Finally, the author concludes that space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children’s book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. This does not make sense. Perhaps the absolute number under age ten is increasing, however, other age group such as age thirty to forty is sharply increasing. This scenario gives birth to the decline of children proportion. Even if both of absolute number and the proportion are declining, it is irrational to suggest that children’s book enjoy less popular. Perhaps the decrease of absolute number and proportion contribute to the investment of education because their parents have abundant financial resource and pay more attention to their children’s education.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author maintains. To strengthen the argument, the author would have to provide more evidence concerning the absolute number of children under age 10. To better evaluate the argument, the author should reason more convincingly, cite some evidence that is more persuasive, and take every possible consideration into account.
