Sharing an opinion that the upcoming generation are the brick layer of the future, education has always been our primary issue, and some people therefore propose that governments should offer college and university education free of charge to all students, holding a belief that it’s essential to make the high education accessible to everyone. I concede with the speaker’s assertion insofar as government should do its best to provide college educational opportunity to as many people as possible. Yet the assertion that all the students should be exempt from tuition is somewhat arbitrary and unpractical, even may bring about some adverse effects. There is no denying that exemption of fees of all students has some merits. It will ease the financial burden of the students to a large degree, especially for those who are from impoverished family. without such a pressure, students could be more focused on their study, rather than be forced to do some part time job to finance their tuition . Beides, this unified policy provides students a equal startpoint, which some people may consider essential for government creating a society with more equity and fairness. However, the assertion goes to far in providing equal opportunities. For one thing, the free high education lays too much burden on the government finance, taking up too much taxation which could be used to tackling more exigent problems, such as unemployment, hunger, or popularization of primary education . Imagine that the money, which could have help some children who cannot even afford to go to primary school, would be spent on someone from affluent family, who do not even concern whether the college education is free, or how much money he or she spent. To guarantee the free high education, the government would have to either increase the tax rate, which may already be so high to bear for some family in poverty, or leaving other urgent problem unresolved, both of which would sow the instable factors to the society. For another, with more money saved, some students may lead a more extravagant life, showing off their wealth, undermining the academic sphere in the school. Under such circumstances, the equity of society is actually compromised, for the rich ones get the unnecessary financial exemption. In the light of the forgoing statements, absolute free-of-charge high education to all students is an untenable suggestion, instead, a more comprehensive tuition system should be established. First and foremost, an assessment of the students’ family financial situation is indispensable when they enter the college, and university should offer the tuition exemption, wholly or partially, for those who are really in need. Besides, other forms of financial aid could be implemented, such as scholarship from some non-government institutions or low interest bank loans, which could not only ease the government financial pressure, but would incent students to be more hard working as well. To sum up, government should always find a way to provide better education with equal opportunies to every citizen, yet there is no simple solution that can address the issue once and for all. Only through a comprehensive and practical mechanism like the one mentioned above, can government really provide an educational system with greater equity, underpinning the society’s progress. |
