The Emperor Augustus, it appears, commissioned an idealized sculptured portrait, the features of which are so unrealistic as to constitute what one scholar calls an “artificial face.”

(A) so unrealistic as to constitute

(B) so unrealistic they constituted

(C) so unrealistic that they have constituted

(D) unrealistic enough so that they constituteA

(E) unrealistic enough so as to constitute

The verbs are and calls indicate that the sculpture is being viewed and judged in the present. Thus, neither the past tense verb constituted (in B) nor the present perfect verb have constituted (in C) is correct; both suggest that the statue’s features once constituted an artificial face but no longer do so. 现在完成式不是指过去某个时间开始一直延续到现在吗?那这里为什么解释说but no longer do so???

现在完成时强调的过去一直到现在,但不表示对将来有任何暗示,所以,but no longer do so就很容易理解了,因为将来的状况可能发生变化。

Also, B would be better if that were inserted after so unrealistic, although the omission of that is not ungrammatical

请问一下,解释中提到﹙B﹚若加上that则会较好,又提到so…that中的that可省略,这在OG中有没有实际的例子呢?我记得好象that不可省啊!

from longman, 当so used when emphasizing the degree or amount of something by saying what the result is时,有如下用法:

So … as to be
The particles are so small as to be almost invisible.

So … (that)
He was so weak that he could hardly stand up.
There was so much smoke that they couldn't see across the hallway.
Everything happened so quickly I hadn't time to think.

不知道大家有没有真正意识到这道题的实际考点是简洁原则:因为划线部分不是句子主体,所以that they肯定是ETS为了与考点匹配编出的错项,而E明显是语法错误,所以只有A是唯一正选.当然,总结as to用法也可以,但不需要抠ETS人为编出来的错项细节

B would be better if that were inserted after so unrealistic, although the omission of that is not ungrammatical

我想问的是ETS说插入that好,但是后面B项是

so unrealistic they constituted
是过去式呀,这不是和前面are后面calls不匹配了吗

我也觉得简洁和时态是考察重点,并不在于考察that是否省略!

这题我和rtGG讨论过,但是今天看了解释还是有些疑惑

The verbs are and calls indicate that the sculpture is being viewed and judged in the present. Thus, neither the past tense verb constituted (in B) nor the present perfect verb have constituted (in C) is correct; both suggest that the statue’s features once constituted an artificial face but no longer do so。

这个是ETS开始说得,但后面又说o, B would be better if that were inserted after so unrealistic,

但是后面B项是

so unrealistic they constituted

是过去式呀,这不是和前面are后面calls不匹配了吗

再问一下大家,因为比较疑惑

在GMAT里,现在完成时表示过去大段时间 for instance: in the last decades

或者一个从过去一直延续到现在的状态,但对将来没有预表。所以og解释”but no longer do so“。这句句子强调的是一个一直发生的状态,而不是强调这个状态的完成。
