答案选的D，我选的E...    首先就排掉了C,D  因为觉得activates应该和encourages平行
看了以前的帖子有人说，如果是activates的话就变成了 the museum activates the animated functions of the piece，显然不对
可是恕我愚钝，没明白这个显然...   反而我倒觉得就应该是museum activates...
求指教，求纠正我的错误思维！

个人认为activate和touch平行，是游客touch了exhibit，然后activate了functions. 不是博物馆activates了functions...

可是我感觉activate是一个使意动词.              使...做... 不是一般都是对别人的动作么？

This is a logical issue. Try to really understand the intended meaning of the sentence, and figure it out using common-sense logic.
Question: What causes the activation?
Answer: The action of "touch". Not the noun "exhibit".

This is correct. Please check out the e-e explanation of the word "thereby".
e.g. A did X, and thereby did Y.
The connotation of the word "thereby" in this sentence is that the action Y was a result of the action X.

E. exhibit which, as a result, activates
Here, "which" leads a noun modifier, and thus - as you know - should generally follow the touch-rule, i.e. modify the closest preceding noun "exhibit". Therefore this choice does not make sense.
